19 states have never had a female governor

(CNN) When she was sworn in shortly after midnight, Democrat Kathy Hochul became the first female governor in New York state history.

She also became one of nine women governors currently serving in the US, tying a record high.

(Snip)

Experts say women have a tougher time getting elected as governors for several reasons.

"The biggest one is the perception that the leadership qualities that one needs to be a governor (or a President) are not ones that women possess," said Debbie Walsh, CAWP's director. "The image of a governor (or President) is still male with gendered stereotypes of how men lead -- decisive, authoritative, the place where the buck stops."

as does Iowa. Neither are the kind of person I'd like to see lead my state.

The last time California had a serious female candidate for governor it was Meg Whitman, a Republican, who spent who knows how much money and over a year telling voters how great the state was when she moved here back in the 70s. She was running against Jerry Brown, who was the governor during the golden age she kept going on about: he won handily. The voters weren't anti-woman: they were anti-self-grandizing, anti-thinks-she-can-buy-the-seat

I think this is one of the things that frustrates women and other individuals from underrepresented groups as they seek leadership positions.

Hochul is the first female governor in NY State history (and the first from western NY in over a century according to NY1)

I suppose a state associated so much with diversity and progress would have achieved this breakthrough decades ago.

Still better late than never...
