(30,613 posts)This bill could make a huge difference in the midterms.
Of course, it would also be really nice to save democracy with the two voting rights bills.

(2,868 posts)merely has to modify one line in the bill, and it has to return to the Senate for another vote, giving Schumer the premise for combining the votes on both bills.

(30,613 posts)Those Senate rules are so freaking arcane...

(2,868 posts)The Speaker can change one line, pass that in the House, then it has to return to the Senate for another vote, because technically it's a different bill.
As to Schumer combining the two bills in one vote, I'll be watching with great fascination.

(30,613 posts)They would have been worked out behind closed doors.

(2,868 posts)when they have the majority, just ram it through with no amendments, but more likely Schumer will do a vote-a-rama, but the progressives aren't going to vote for anything the Repubs want, or Manchin and Sinema for that matter, so it should remain intact.
Either Schumer, or whoever is advising him, has tremendous understanding of the Senate rules. To get the Parliamentarian to agree to three reconciliation bills in one calendar year (two per fiscal year) was mind-blowing.

(58,598 posts)not that McConnell would follow the rules, but Schumer probably will.

(2,080 posts)As speaker for the next 20 years. And if not, then coach, train, guide, and lead the next Speaker from or up and coming young leaders. Shes a real talent and I hope her abilities, leadership, and sheepdogging of the caucus can be learned
