NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee state health commissioner says children now account for more than a third of the states COVID-19 cases, a sharp rise from earlier as the delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread.
Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey said Wednesday that Tennessee had 14,000 pediatric cases in the previous seven days, which she said was 57% more than the previous week. She says such cases now make up 36% of total COVID-19 cases, when its historically been in the 10 to 15 percent range.
The spike in cases among school-age children has brought calls from some health officials for more forceful protective measures such as mask mandates at schools. Gov. Bill Lee has resisted such suggestions.

(6,682 posts)People around here are living as if there was no virus. Im scared for my 5 yr old kindergartener grand child. Less than 1 full week in, hes had to quarantine once already. Every time hes quarantined, my daughter (a struggling single mom) has to take off work. How many times will her work allow her to take days off to be with her quarantined son?
Im in the Nashville area. Daughter is one county east.

(10,828 posts)My husband and I officially moved last Monday. Our household goods arrived today (most of which is now in storage). Went to the Acme and was asked about my telephone number, the area code. When I told the cashier wed just moved back to PA from TN, the bagger looked astonished. Why would you leave TN? she asked.
My reply?
Too conservative, too religious, too ignorant. So ignorant they refuse to mask up during the current surge.
Glad to be home. Finally😊
