Doctors and lawyers busted in massive NYC slip-and-fall scheme

A shifty team of doctors and lawyers allegedly recruited a network of people for a slip-and-fall scheme to cheat businesses and insurance companies across New York City out of more than $31 million, officials charged Wednesday.

Over the course of five years, more than 400 “patients” were instructed to claim they had tripped and fallen over sidewalk cracks, potholes and cellar doors and then sign their names to fraudulent lawsuits that totaled millions of dollars.

After the staged accidents, the patients were steered to specific attorneys, then to certain doctors and specialists, where they got chiropractic and medical care to substantiate their claims, officials said.


Some patients even had surgeries they did not need as part of the scheme, pocketing up to $1,500 for going under the knife.


To facilitate the scheme, operators would recruit the poorest people they could find, anyone desperate enough for money that they’d be willing to go under the knife for a post-surgery payment. Some of the patients were so hard up that their first request at planning meetings was for food.

“Many of the patients did not have sufficient clothing to keep them warm during the wintertime and had poor-quality shoes,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement. “Members of the fraud scheme also recruited patients who were drug addicts. It was also common for scheme participants to recruit patients from homeless shelters in New York City.”
