A school district opted out of a free meals program, saying students could 'become spoiled'

With two girls in elementary school and a mother who is a teacher, the Dringenburg household in a Milwaukee suburb had been joyous and excited about back-to-school season — until this year, when the Waukesha School District board decided to opt out of a federally funded program that would give free meals to all students regardless of family income.

The board voted June 9 to return to the pre-pandemic National School Lunch Program, which offers free and reduced-price lunches to students who apply and receive federal money for them. Waukesha is the only eligible school district in the state to eschew the funding.

Although Dave Dringenburg’s children had never qualified for the National School Lunch Program, he said the decision angered and disappointed him because officials “seem to be out of touch with the community’s needs.” It also led to an opportunity, he said, to advocate for change in a city where demographics and attitudes are changing rapidly.

“We’re determined to make Waukesha as good as it can be, starting with something as easy as feeding kids,” he said. “This is a way to not only connect to other parents but also of realizing that change is possible — it’s just a matter of being together to do it.”

Since June, the Alliance for Education in Waukesha, about 900 parents and teachers who connected over social media, has pressed the district to switch back to the “universal” or free-for-everyone meals after board members decried the program’s potential to produce an “addiction” to the service — a stigma that some experts have disproved. Their efforts come amid a coronavirus pandemic with economic effects that are hurting families across the nation.

...

“As we get back to whatever you want to believe normal means, we have decisions to make,” Joseph Como Jr., president of the school board, said at the June meeting. “I would say this is part of normalization.”

Karin Rajnicek, a school board member, said the free program made it easy for families to “become spoiled.” Darren Clark, assistant superintendent for business services, said there could be a “slow addiction” to the service.

Dealing with the free/reduced price lunch program, handling student $$$, etc. is a huge PITA! I’ll bet their business office is NOT happy about this.

Most of the children here qualify for free lunches and it's simply not worth accounting for those who can pay.

When our children were going to school this always felt a little awkward to me like I *should* be paying for lunch but it sure came in handy whenever our kids forgot to bring their own home-made lunches.

And I pretty much went by my parent's rules: by the sixth grade you can make your own lunch at home or suffer whatever the school is serving.

It will increase the time in line and the time it takes to serve lunch since every kid will either have to pay or give their lunch number. That will make COVID worse. It will increase the cost to them both in terms of the reinbursement and the auditing cost in terms of the participants. It will also necessitate daily deposits of money and all the attendant bookkeeping involved with that. Oh, and it will cause some kids not to eat.

A quick google search shows they have a minority percentage of 36%, above Wiaconsin average of 30%.

I believe there's your rub.

Right out of the repug playbook: if it hurts (usually lower income) minorities more than it does whites, than damn the hungry kids! And add in a whipped topping that is positively redolent of the old "welfare queen" canard.

"Your brown kids are hungry? They shoulda been born white."

At least the officials are being realistic about what the Republicans plan to do the next time they're back in power nationally: cut off free school lunches for families who can afford to pay for those lunches.

We're 29 trillion in debt at the moment and it's likely to be more like 35-36 trillion by the next time the Republicans could win control.

The first thing they're going to do is to push to cut spending to pay for whatever things which, by definition, people can pay for themselves (unless those people happen to be rich. of course).

And frankly, the Republicans will probably be successful in rolling back that spending.

(Personally if I were directing spending at a national level, I'd rather take the money that will be spent on lunches for middle class kids and spend it anywhere to help impoverished people. But since neither party is proposing to do that, my opinion remains my own rather than being anyone's policy.)

schools COULD NOT FUNCTION without the virtually unlimited amount of time parents spend volunteer at schools doing everything from helping with reading, putting on events, running foundations, raising money, recess monitors, crossing guards, etc.

the schools would collapse without this massive input of FREE LABOR

it's time the School Board stopped being spoiled and started to Pay the Parents!!!!

"Wisconsin rich," so this is aimed directly at minority children. The kids of blue collar and farm workers, kids of color. With the country being in the mood they're in, telling slave-like company owners to go eff themselves, maybe they had better not get "too spoiled" themselves.

This is Sennsenbrenner, Ryan, and Walker country. They're perfect examples.

When you take the food from children, you've disrobed and your evil is in full view.

Get those devils off your school board, tell them to resign, vote them off, and NEVER allow people like that in places of power, especially over kids.

Just as gross as the people taking lunch out of kids' hands and throwing it in the garbage.

Just gross.
