The way they're handling the news regarding Afghanistan is just incredible to watch. This is our American dysfunction. There is no middle ground. Do we even have a sense of what good vs evil looks like anymore when every organization that should set the example always seems to be on a destroy mission of its own?
I'm so disappointed in this country. Every day it feels like the American experience involves walking in a wasteland of blowhards and/or liars. I KNOW we can do better.

(9,443 posts)And what is really sick is that we know there are Americans who are glad that we lost service members and Afghan citizens just because they see it as a way to further their own agenda.

Australian media are shamelessly following suit. Bought the whole Afghanistan panic deal about . . . whatever.
Any World Media doing it better? Any signs of intelligence out there?

(46,700 posts)Our media is coming across gleefully confrontational. There is no sense of a president that they respect. It's tear down reporting. Just like they did in Clinton's time. And in so doing, they're are playing into the right's hands.
What I would have wanted to see was fair reporting. We had literally tens of thousands Afghan vets who could tell the story in a different way. Where were they in the early days of their reporting? The media heads should save their admonishment for the Republicans in Congress who dragged their feet on expediting Visas, they should have highlighted the fact that the State Department provided Americans in Afghanistan warnings months before the withdrawal began. These Americans chose to put themselves and our soldiers in danger by turning the withdrawal into a high risk operation.
Fair reporting. Provide all the facts at the same time. Is that so hard?

(21,431 posts)about the delta variant's worldwide effect and how various nations are coping. There was a guest from Asia. Didn't get his name or country of origin because I started listening part way into it. I think he was from China (slight accent) but now lives in the US or Canada. Not sure, but I think he was a journalist. He talked about a recent trip to Asia and about other places he has been.
After talking about China's very strictly enforced covid policies, he said that even other countries in Asia have very high compliance with policies, voluntarily, without China's enforcement tactics. He mentioned the lockdowns in Australia that people grumble about, but comply with. The individualism in Europe means less constrictions and more grumbling, but generally people are complying in most places.
But, he said that the US has the worst record in the world for compliance with health guidelines like masks and vaccines. People in other nations are appalled that Americans have free vaccines and refuse them as well as masks and get away with it, causing massive outbreaks. According to that NPR guest, when Asian nations get news about massive outbreaks in the US and refusal to enforce policies to fight the pandemic, they regard us as backward and a failed state, not worthy of respect any more.

(21,431 posts)I remember a time when the US was respected and admired in most places, despite our faults. So sad to see how low we have sunk.
It started going downhill with Raygun, deregulations, trickle on economics, and a backlash against civil rights gains. Junior Bush accelerated the downhill slide with unnecessary corporate wars and more deregulation and praise for economic "freedumb" (for the top one percenters). TFG finished the race to the bottom with his grifting and catering to Russian interests.

(21,431 posts)I also remember that, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the world stood with us. There was a report from that time saying that JFK offered to show proof of the Cuban missiles to European leaders before the UN session began and the response was that proof was not necessary at that time because the word of the US president was enough.

(6,818 posts)How connected to money from abroad is your income? It's probable that the highest earners at the highest levels are beholden to non-American interests for the security of their lifestyles. We celebrated internationalism in the Clinton era but our government's regulatory efforts never met the challenge, hiding their ineptitude after so many attempts to understand and explain it using terminology from and for the roaring twenties of the last century. We inherit a generation who've given over to cynicism on a scale unimagined. Is it a wonder to anyone that a media so corrupt thrives on it's own fantasies?

(2,570 posts)media is. Biden and the Democratic must not be allowed to pass that reconciliation budget. And the Republicans and Trump must be protected. After all the media not just Fox, all of them supported Trump's big lie by allowing the supporters have the microphone anytime they wanted it.
