Showtime. The lights are flickering, and I fear that Hurricane Ida is about to knock out the power. I dont have a generator because I dont have natural gas service on my street. I think portable generators are too dangerous, so I wont have power until . . . whenever.
After Hurricane Isaac in 2012, which was only a Cat I at landfall, I was without power for 7 days. We are expecting temperatures in the low 90s once the storm moves on, so with the heat index, it will be at least 100 degrees for who knows how long.
Im inside the New Orleans levee system, so Im not too worried about storm surge in my neighborhood. But were supposed to get 10-15 of rain. My backyard and the streets in my neighborhood flood during minor thunderstorms, so I am expecting flooding from rain. No water got inside my house during Katrina, but there was about 4 in the garage. I dont think this storm will dump much more rain than Katrina, because for now, its moving quickly (15 mph.)
Weve been under a tornado watch for since about 7:00 am, but I havent heard of any that have touched down yet.
All my devices have been charged, but I need to save battery power, so I probably wont be posting again on DU until I have electricity.
To all my DU friends on the Gulf Coast, stay safe and good luck! See you on the other side . . .
Update: I survived and my indoor cats and outdoor cat colony are all fine. No power, no water. There was no flooding on my little dead end street and there appears to be only minor damage to my house. I have plenty of drinking water and food. And lots of cat food. Now I just need a shower and some AC. Its hot and expected to get hotter over the next few days. Heat index over 100! Sending good vibes to my DU friends in the path of the storm. Stay safe!

(25,258 posts)I hear you regarding generators....
Check out shelters as possible charging stations.
During our Feb blackout the warming shelters had charging stations.

(49,445 posts)And put an axe, crowbar, hatchet or something in your attic. You don't want to get trapped in your attic and be unable to hack your self to the roof.
Good luck!

(1,910 posts)They are quite safe to use after the storm has passed. Put it outside in the backyard and run a heavy gauge extension cord. Its safe when you keep the carbon monoxide well away from the house. Its great to power the fridge and a fan, maybe a light and radio. It helps the time waiting for power to pass. They are not even that expensive as long as you buy it during a non peak storm time of year.

(17,530 posts)You can hear the rumble of the train, and the sound of the horn in the distance, but there is little you can do about it.
There are too many things that can go wrong when the wind is over a hundred miles per hour and rain is falling by the bucketful.
Good luck to the OP.
