A new coronavirus variant, C.1.2, has been detected in South Africa and a number of other countries, with concerns that
it could be more infectious and evade vaccines, according to a new preprint study by South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform.
Scientists first detected C.1.2 in May 2021, finding that it was descended from C.1, which scientists found surprising as C.1 had last been detected in January. The new variant has "mutated substantially" compared to C.1 and is more mutations away from the original virus detected in Wuhan than any other Variant of Concern (VOC) or Variant of Interest (VOI) detected so far worldwide.
The study also found that the C.1.2 lineage has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, which is nearly twice as fast as the current global mutation rate of the other variants.
While first detected in South Africa, C.1.2 has since been found in England, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.

(12,226 posts)We must keep diligent and hopefully the medical/science divisions come up an ass kicking solution.

(34 posts)Of it all. Will we ever have any semblance of normality? Life is especially depressing now.

He let loose the crazy ones.

(10,156 posts)It mutates constantly from DNA structure changes. Eventually it'll becoming more fatal.

(3,542 posts)in the end, they're going to kill us all OR as many as they can.
And then, maybe one day, they'll say "I'm sorry, I was just getting the libs (or whatever the tale will be)..".
Oh, I forgot, and if we survive this - their memories will fade and they'll share "...it wasn't me, I always believed in science".

(46,793 posts)I would have assumed that medical science would be able to defeat the virus.
And that the public would be quite cooperative.

I still absolutely believe in your first assumption. We've seen the successes in the form of wonderful vaccines.
However, I've done a complete 180 about face on your second. I still do think the majority of people are being cooperative, but, the loud people are doing everything they can to screw it up. Solely because they can't face being wrong.

(46,793 posts)I was a bit more cautious, and silly me thought maybe the Fall.
Yes I think eventually the virus will come under control. I assumed the vaccine would take care of things by now. Did not foresee the variations. And I assumed we would have found successful treatments fairly quickly. I was so naive.
I knew early on that there were some people who thought the virus was a hoax, but I assumed they would change their minds one they saw the deaths all around them. Again how naive.
I agree, I think stubbornness is a part of it. Also if they admit the virus is real, they would have to face all the other lies they are telling themselves about white supremacy, the GOP version of reality, all of it. They are entitled and paranoid.
