"You've won more championships than anyone. You'll turn 70 on Halloween. You've got grandkids. But you just signed a contract extension. Why are you still doing this?" the Times reporter Alan Blinder asked Saban.
Saban, a terse tactician who normally goes out of his way to remain apolitical, went in an unexpected direction.

"She's older," Blinder said of the 81-year-old Democratic House speaker.
"Yeah. Way older," Saban replied. "Older than me, and probably has a more important job than me."

For a Southern College Football Coach, that's downright Liberal of you Lou.
Which, it just occurred to me. Do you think screening for Head Football coach includes screen for political orientation? Seems like Coaches are turning to politics to carry on the Republican message.
We all know how important the institution of college football is to Republicans. I wonder if they would ever hire a black coach - how would the Alabama Football boosters react?

(957 posts)Lou Saban was coach for the Denver Broncos a long time ago. He earned a degree of infamy when at the end of the game he went for a tie (in the pre-overtime era) rather than a win. He was heavily chastised for this, and the quote from him was "Half a loaf is better than none."

And why do talented black athletes continue to flock to a university in a racist state?

(31,984 posts)Just like talented white athletes. At the U of Alabama they are on that path.

(267 posts)He was raised in WVa when it was predominently blue collar, labor union, democratic. That i can remember he doesn't take political stances very often, but when he has it was to support his team in protesting George Flovd's killing, to support masking at his university and to advocate for vaccinations at the school. Seems like a center left type in a job where he doesn't want to be too outspoken.
