I am gripped with schadenfreude every time I hear of a public anti-vaxxer, anti-masker, covide denier being hospitalized with the virus. I don't revel in it, but am overwhelmed with feelings of satisfaction that I am sane. I am doing everything I can to do what is right for my community.
It saddens me that that these people are selling their souls, but I am so glad when these evil people are gone.
I'm a horrible person.

(2,970 posts)Your feelings are justifiable. Also, you have self-awareness enough to explore your feelings on the matter and feel guilty about your schaudenfreude, so you're emotionally evolved enough to examine your thoughts and behavior and how it effects others. This makes you a good, thoughtful person who is justifiably angry at the selfish, destructive shitheads in the world. No one cried when Hitler died. Now these folks are not Hitler, but they would probably be Hitler, or follow him, if given the chance. So, you're not a horrible person at all. You're a good person, who can and does reflect thoughtfully on themselves and deplores the evil that is around us. No need to feel bad about it. It's essentially Darwinism in action.

(102,200 posts)I have to deal with these people, as do my sister, friends, colleagues. So, I have to keep it in perspective. As I've posted elsewhere, I just remember that as angry as they make me, they might have innocent children and perhaps less recalcitrant, vaccinated family members hoping for their recovery... So... The assholes may deserve everything they've brought upon themselves, but do their families?

(9,963 posts)Just like religious terrorists who kill with guns, these virus terrorists kill with their ignorance and their refusal to get vaccinated because they think theyre accomplishing a political goal of making Bidens vaccination plan to end the pandemic a failure. They are terrorists because they do nothing to help stop deaths and they actively spread the virus that causes deaths.
I can feel no sympathy for any of them. I feel much sympathy for their children, who are being put at risk of death by their own parents.

The OP is showing the utmost in compassion toward the innocent while at the same time condemning anti-vaxxers who are mostly responsible for the rapid rise in Covid cases in this country. I don't think we have any moral compulsion to show any empathy or sympathy for Trump loving murderers.

(3,231 posts)myself recently. The important thing is that we recognize it and dont like it. It gives us the opportunity to practice restraint and self control. The other side, specifically the trump Republicans, they dont seem to have any self control since Putin put trump into power. They got a taste of what it would be like to own the other side, and they liked it a lot. Their type was in power and they no longer had to exhibit any self control. They were released from the bondage of being controlled by the liberal elites, and the new power structure approved and encouraged who they were being. We must fight these people without losing control of ourselves, awareness is the first step. I appreciate this post and you for posting it.

(1,554 posts)You are simply disgusted with a great deal of people who are acting very selfish. Many of them
are not feeling any ramifications for being careless, and its frustrating. I have spent a lot of time wondering if I was/am being too careful and missing out on things, but know that I am being smart in my actions.
It does make our actions feel rewarded when we see the others get sick from their selfishness and disregard for their fellow citizens.
The orange menace is completely to blame for this with his total failure from the beginning to take it seriously.
A doctor friend (anesthesiologist, who says if he sees you, its 50/50 shot you survive) was saying we really need to start focusing on is the rest of the world. If we cant get EVERYONE on the planet vaccinated its never gonna go away, and will continue to mutate.

(257 posts)There is actually a whole sub on Reddit titled, "The Herman Cain Award". It's screenshots of Facebook posts (and other social media) of Trumpsters doing their best to be horrific, non-empathetic, racist, selfish, ignorant, self-centered aholes. The only thing is this trumpsters all get Covid and then it's their posts after that.
Now one good thing is the sub does post anyone that "redeems" themselves by denouncing the anti-vaxx nonsense and trying to get others to get vaxxed. However I can tell you they are very few of these unfortunately. The ones that probably angered me the most are the ones complaining about how horrible it is in the hospital and how unfair it is their family can't be in there to see them. Predictably there is also the GoFundMe at the end where either themselves while they're in the hospital or their family members after they passed ask for money to help. Of course there's always the post about what good Christians they were.
I am struggling so much with this myself because I feel like an awful person because it seems so hypocritical of me to feel this way. But at the same time you get what you give and we have all put up with enough that I don't think that it's unreasonable to not feel sympathy for these people at this point.
It will sound crass but it made me not feel as bad when I saw how even in death they or their families refused to say "we/they were wrong."
Additionally there's a whole bunch of posts about giving kids invermectin and I'm not going to feel bad for any person that does that.
I will save my empathy for the innocent who truly deserve it. I think a lot of us are too our breaking point and we are having a normal human response to what we are being put through. I can tell you my final straw is there lack of worry for children. I live in Arizona and my daughter has been in school since Aug 2nd. She's in junior high so it's only 7th and 8th grade at her school. On August 25th an email came out from the principal that said that 577 students and 123 employees reported testing positive for covid and that 1,859 individuals had been placed into quarantine including 9 classes or programs.
I hope all of you are safe and doing your best to keep you your loved ones safe. 💓

(5,293 posts)It doesn't differentiate whether the sufferer or enjoyer is the asshole.
Case in point: when I was a kid, my mom was standing at the snack stand at a Dodgers game behind a television personality I won't name (suffice to say he thought People Are Funny and Kids Say the Darnedest Things). This guy was boasting to his friend that a flood in the Central Valley (yes, I'm old-enough to remember rain in the Central Valley) ruined the tomato crop there, so his tomatoes would sell for a lot more than they otherwise would have. It that case, the enjoyer is the asshole.
Oh the other hand, when a Limbaugh dies of lung cancer, or an obnoxious anti-mask anti-vaxx influencer dies of Covid, or a Derek Chauvin gets convicted, the brief smile is because justice got it right for a change.

Feeling schadenfreude, satisfaction, and even relief is not being a horrible person - it is being a human being under immense pressure.
Caliman73
(11,728 posts)Sure, it would be great if we could all just look at the humanity and be compassionate and caring without judgement. That is not how humans are wired though.
When people are warned, for months, hearing about more than half a million dead people, likely people they know, at least friends or extended family.
If it were only unvaccinated people that were affected, then we could stand back and say, "tsk, tsk, tsk," and go on with our lives, but their selfish actions are affecting everyone. I have a 11 year old daughter who cannot get vaccinated. She is at risk, and at the mercy of others, unless I confine her to the house. We have people who are so full of anger or greed and lust for power, that they ignore science or even worse, lie and spread propaganda, using their status as "trusted" to tell people not to care about others.
I think that we all see that and we want some kind of retribution. It doesn't make us horrible. It makes us human. Now, as you said, "reveling" in pain, death, etc... would reveal a darker nature.
I think it is okay to allow yourself to feel all of your valid emotions, just check yourself and fight to keep your feelings of humanity.
