The Department of Defense is knocking down reports that a number of dogs working with the military were allegedly left behind as the U.S. finalized its exit from Afghanistan this week.

A Pentagon spokesman tells PEOPLE these stories are "erroneous" and that "our military working dogs were safely evacuated."

The denial comes after American Humane — a nonprofit that promotes animal welfare and safety — issued a statement Monday claiming the U.S. was "leaving behind brave U.S. military contract working dogs to be tortured and killed at the hand of our enemies."

He continued: "Photos circulating online were animals under the care of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue, not dogs under the care of the U.S. military. Despite an ongoing complicated and dangerous retrograde [withdrawal] mission, U.S. forces went to great lengths to assist the Kabul Small Animal Rescue as much as possible."

7. My understanding was that Small Animal Rescue in Kabul

is directed by Charlotte Maxwell Jones, an American from Tennessee who runs this sanctuary. She was attempting to evacuate with all of her animals (over 200) that were crated and ready to load for departure. There was much confusion and chaos in the final days at the airport. I read that these dogs were strays or pets belonging to the Americans and Afghans who evacuated and could not take their pets. At the last minute, a Department of Defense official, ordered her to let the dogs loose and board the plane, which she refused to do without her dogs. There were no working American military dogs in this group. They were evacuated already. The military then opened the bags of dog food and left open bags at the airport. Supposedly, Charlotte remained behind as is going to work with the Taliban to rescue them again and hope to charter a flight with another non profit organization as soon as the airport is open again. In the meantime, I believe she has returned to her sanctuary to care for the animals. I am not certain what exactly happened, but if this occurred, it is awful, and sure to upset animal lovers. Another animal rescue group, NOWZAD, was flown out of Kabul and went to Great Britain. Supposedly, Boris Johnson's wife is an animal lover and was instrumental in that evacuation.
