(2,220 posts)when Ike blew through Ohio in 2008 and the derecho in 2012 knocked out our power for a week, we used our cars to charge our phones. We had chargers that plugged into the lighter. Im sure there is better technology now. Yes..we took a lot of long drives, but there really wasnt much else to do.

I bought the car percolator at Sharper Image years ago - amazed that it still works. My supermarket owner gave me the French press and a bag of blue mountain coffee one Christmas.
We always keep a coal pot and a few bags of coal - after Gilbert we had no power for weeks but we were able to get fresh fish at the beach - We'd roast it on the grill in foil. Cooked lots of stuff with coal.
It's good to see that the next hurricane looks like a fish storm.

(2,962 posts)Ike was one hell of a hurricane.
Houston and all surrounding areas just stopped for awhile.
Nothing to.do.

(2,220 posts)Here in Columbus, we had over six hours of 80mph winds and a smattering of rain. Took out our old maple and our gazebo. That was enough of a taste of hurricane to let me know I would never want to ride one out.

(2,962 posts)It was way over a hundred.
The sound.
My old house had no problems.
Good thing we put in new windows and not a new roof.
We had a generator and plenty of gas.
I knew Ike was coming at us.
Houston got lucky because Ike turned east at the very end.
I feel for the people in Louisiana.

There are no hurricanes here, but in an emergency I have firewood galore, candles and an acoustic
guitar. I can heat, cook, see in the dark and play music. I'm old school. Real old.....
So old I can remember phone booths long before these damn smart phones. Actually, I love my smart phone.
For my 71st b-day, I'm getting a radio/light/phone charger. Solar or wind up.
