No matter what you call it, this type of immunity offers much needed good news in what seems like an endless array of bad news regarding COVID-19.
Over the past several months, a series of studies has found that some people mount an extraordinarily powerful immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Their bodies produce very high levels of antibodies, but they also make antibodies with great flexibility likely capable of fighting off the variants of coronavirus circulating in the world but also likely effective against variants that may emerge in the future.

(33,120 posts)There is no estimate of the percentage of the total population, but, the characteristic of the hybrid is a person who contracted the original strain in 2020 and WHO HAVE RECIEVED THE VACCINE.
So, does being vaccinated have more to do with the "superhuman" immunity than anything else? Probably.
I despise sciency sounding non science articles such as this.
brush
(53,764 posts)I'll pass on having the so-called super immunity since I'd have to have had covid first to get there.
Hugin
(33,120 posts)I suppose its possible the intent of the article is to encourage the, "Eh, I already had it, so there's no need to get vaccinated" crowd to get vaccinated.
Anecdotal, but, last Spring I talked with someone who had contracted a symptomatic case in 2020 and couldn't wait to get vaccinated. In fact, somehow, he managed to get it before me.
So, I guess he's 'super' now. Which is fine by me and more power to him.

(53,764 posts)anti-vaxx crowd rejecting science and the vaccines. Makes no sense that they listen to stupid trump on masking. All he had to do was model masking early on and covid could've been beaten back, at least the earlier variants.
And the anti-mask foolishness has morphed into anti-vaxx dumbness, even though magats and everyone else in the nation has been vaccinated many times in life to start school, to get flu shots, to travel overseas. It's just mass psychosis among the trumpers and I blame him and the disinformation industry his chaotic and crooked administration fostered.
Meanwhile, I'm waiting and will be among the first in line to get my booster shot when they become available.

I said this very thing just a couple of minutes ago in a different thread. He could even have made money off it, selling red MAGA masks with his face, or name, or some slogan on them - "KEEP AMERICA SAFE _MASK UP!"
His idiot followers would have bought them by the truckload.
brush
(53,764 posts)as they were always on the make to grift money from the magats. Seems like a no-brainer that they would've thought of it.
We're in agreement early on masking would've worked, but trump's failure to mask might have come down to a thing as simple as trump didn't want a mask to mess up his orange make-up and ridiculous comb-over.

(30,807 posts)helps produce the resilient feature of the hybrid. If this turns out to be true, maybe in addition to the vaccines we could be subjected to a mild case of Covid and thereby control this disease in the future.

(11,847 posts)I think if this study is overplayed it will hurt the case for vaccines as the Covidiots already think they are superhuman and will use this info to bolster their case that they do not need masks or vax.

(33,120 posts)I think you are correct about how it will play for the MAGAts.
They won't read down that far.

(34,060 posts)Those who have this immunity BOTH contracted COVID AND were vaccinated.
So if they want this characteristic, they have to get vaccinated.
Hugin
(33,120 posts)However, I really believe most of the immunity results these scientists are finding is because of the vaccines.

(22,110 posts)procedures, methods, and/or knowledge gained from extensive studies undertaken on these viruses, etc., will vastly expand human knowledge and lead to miracles not yet anticipated or known yet. One thing I'm aware of is that the high demand for ventilators led to a method implemented where one ventilator can help multiple patients, a much needed improvement (this was, seems like a year or so ago).
As in the past, when severe conditions imperiled the human condition, new medicines, new techniques on growing crops, better methods of using limited resources, etc. all led to an overall improvement of the human condition.
Those still stuck in the past on medical advice/treatment (using horse medicine) deserve what they are putting into their bodies themselves.
They will never join the rest of the human spirit in forging a path towards a better future for all, since they are selfish, into themselves and no one else. Me me me!

(45,421 posts)because they had a bad cold or flu way back in early 2020 before they knew what COVID was and are convinced they had COVID. So some of them are trying to get infected on purpose now.

(1,495 posts)My brother-in-law told me he's totally immune from Covid and maybe he is. His wife had Covid last December and he said he took no precautions, slept in the same bed with her, and they had sex multiple times a day, the whole time she was sick. He says he was never sick and took 3 Covid tests, all negative. This is why a lot of people don't fear Covid, especially if they haven't caught it after all this time. Of course, he refuses to get vaccinated.

You must be at the point where it doesn't phase you in the least what comes out of your b-i-l's mouth, but I would close my eyes, plug my ears and sing "la, la, la" if I heard this directly from an in-law like him.

(91 posts)If I were sick with a cold, let alone Covid, I would not want to have sex. If it is true that your brother-in-law had sex with his Covid-stricken wife multiple times a day, he is a shockingly abusive man!

(1,671 posts)That's how I interpreted it because, otherwise, he's one very sick (in the head) man to do that and then brag about it.

(1,495 posts)My in-laws live in the South, about 1200 miles away from my house in New York. Sadly, they are both very deranged Trumpers. They are both alcoholics and are high on drugs most of the time. My brother-in-law has been in prison multiple times, twice for attempted murder. Once for trying to shoot his wife's brother and another time for trying to run a police officer over with his car.
I have been with my husband for 30 years so I've had to deal with a lot of horrors over the years where my brother-in-law is concerned. In fact, the very first time I met him he was in handcuffs.
In Feburary 2021, they decided to make a surprise trip up to visit us. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to lock the front door after I got the mail, and I saw the front door burst open and they both run into my house without masks. I immediately got a mask and made them go outside.
They told me their covid story in my driveway. I was so shocked and disgusted that I didn't even know what to say.
When he told me that he had been intimate with her several times a day while she was sick with Covid, she laughed and acted like it was the greatest thing in the world. Then they told me that they thought Covid was a democratic hoax (even though she actually had symptomatic Covid and tested positive) to cause Trump to lose the election. They said they weren't getting the vaccine. Then they started ranting about socialism and how Trump was going to be president again in a few months.
I couldn't take it anymore and I lost it. The insanity was too much and I screamed at my brother-in-law, "I'm a socialist! Your brother is a socialist! We hate Trump!"
So then they got mad and left. My husband met them later at their hotel to visit with them, but of course I didn't go. They haven't spoken to me since, but when the pandemic ends and family holiday dinners resume, it's probably going to be pretty awkward. Normally I just try to ignore their bad behavior for the sake of family peace, but I lost control of myself.
ARPad95
(1,671 posts)You don't have to resume any sort of relationship with them after the pandemic ends if he makes you this upset. If your husband wants to, then that's his choice. I don't get why he'd want to though. Is the rest of the family so afraid to "offend" him that his presence is allowed at family gatherings? Family peace is highly overrated if it means kowtowing to that miscreant wacko.
BTW, my husband's brother is not as off the psycho charts, but he definitely pushed the boundaries too far with us and he's out of our lives for good. It helped that his house 2 - 3 miles away from us was foreclosed on so he had to move. We also got rid of our landline phone. Planned to anyway, but his antics sped up the process.
This is what real peace feels like. Hope you will have it, too. It's your choice and you have the right to make it without anyone guilting you into keeping the peace.

(28,337 posts)an advantage over others (and there are always some in any given population) allow that population to continue forward. It's how the contest of life continues. It's how both animals and microbes progress.
This is my point.
