Rape has always been legal in Texas with a few distinct exceptions
My experience starts in the sixties, but judges and juries have agreed that, "She's my wife," She dressed that way," "She's just bitter," and "We don't want to ruin this young boys life," are all reasons why rape is legal. The exceptions are simple, if the boy wasn't white or if the girls family had connections, money or a reputation, then the boy might actually have to serve time. By reputation, I mean that the family could back up and made it clear that the judge, defense attorney, and jury had best keep it honest, stick to the truth and not ruin the name of their daughter, niece and sister.
On the other side, in Texas, you used to regularly read about young men who managed to kill themselves accidentally hanging themselves from trees. Usually there was some indication that the boys who died were following young girls around. In these cases, the death by hanging was a closed case and no more investigations were pursued. When folk grow up knowing that justice will not happen, they begin to find other options.
This is just simple history and I suspect this story is common all through the bible belt.
