Thank you thread for Judge Chutkans

Judge Chutkans is looking at the Insurrection at the US Capitol for the crime that it was. She is sentencing people to some time behind bars. Thank you for stepping us and letting people pay for the crime that they committed. They tried to stop democracy and overthrow the US Government.

Thank You Judge Chutkans

And she isn't the only federal judge who has noticed that the prosecutors are asking for extremely light sentences overall.

The DOJ is prosecuting appropriately. They don't need to be "pressured" to continue to do their jobs. The evidence is different in every case. Some cases with weaker evidence aren't prosecuted as aggressively and deals are made. This is normal. People who want LIFE IN PRISON for misdemeanor charges look ridiculous. What evidence is that they they're not doing their job appropriately?

Judge Chutkans is a patriot.

why are judges chastising them for weak sentences? The judge that I saw yesterday made the statement that people involved in a coup should not be given sentences that keeps them locked up at home.

The system is working as it's intended to. If a prosecutor believes the case against someone is weak, or that the evidence is circumstantial or inconclusive then they are under no obligation to ask for the death penalty every single time and then negotiate down from that. They're all professionals and I trust that they're doing their job properly. The constant droning on and on about "Biden's DOJ is corrupt" and that his "Attorney General isn't doing anything" really serve no good purpose. It creates a false appearance that Biden is incompetent and it just opens the door for the GOP to exploit these false beliefs. Why do anything that helps the GOP?

doesn't mean it was intended to do so.

You kill your argument by saying that the system doesn't require prosecutors to demand the death penalty with only circumstantial evidence. That is not what the OP said. You exaggerated your argument because your case is weak.

These are people that are guilty. It is not a matter of trying to prove the case (as your example suggests). They broke the law and endangered people. They destroyed expensive public property. They attacked law enforcement officials.

There are poor, non-white people serving years in jails all over the country for doing much less.

You worry that pointing this out will make the Biden administration look bad. What makes them look bad is letting these destructive people off with a tsk-tsk. It doesn't start with this administration. Cliven Bundy took up arms agains the FBI and served no time for it. The outcome? He's still doing it. He is still stealing grazing rights on public land without paying. We sent the message that nothing happens when you do this kind of thing. Another outcome? His son and his drinking buddies take over a national park building, trash it, threaten police with guns. He too just walks away.

You know that if these nice white yahoos had been black and marching for Black Lives Matter or poor people demanding a reform of the financial system, they would have been jailed for doing way less damage than these insurrectionists.

If we just back our candidate regardless of actions, we mimic the trumpers. I campaigned for Biden heavily. I will do so again and again. I believe he is proposing the very best way to get our county back on track to having a government for the people. If everyone is afraid to tell him that something is wrong, we do him and the country a disservice.

Okay. Well, I guess it actually IS a suggestion that Biden's DOJ ignore the law and engage in extrajudicial prosecution and revenge in the way that we imagine a Republican administration would be doing.

I don't think that's a good idea.

Meanwhile, the DoJ isn't even recommending jail time.

I kinda think the DoJ sides with the insurrectionist. When Judges have to tell prosecutors they're being way too lenient, you know you're doing a bad job.
