One of the heroes of the Capitol riot tweets about soft sentences for rioters:

Text

I can’t believe a lot of rioters are getting less time in jail than my recovery time from two different surgeries in my attempt to protect the Capitol and the people in it.

Their sentences should be in YEARS, not months and days. And the charges should be serious, not this petty-ass trespass stuff.

adding time to what prosecutors were asking for. One judge stated that an attack on our democracy deserves a stiffer sentence than home confinement.

Every person that walked through those doors should see 5+years in prison. Seditious Conspiracy and treason deserve the harshest of punishments.

As long as politics are embedded in our judiciary, our Constitution is just a piece of paper.

They all ought to be down-on-their-knees grateful that they don’t have to face someone like me in the judge’s seat.

I wouldn’t throw the book at ‘em.

I’d throw the WHOLE FREAKIN’ LIBRARY at ‘em!!! I’d throw entire book-publishing empires at ‘em. I’d rule in whatever way kept them incarcerated for the longest possible time.

They’d learn.

At the very least, they’d learn that there are consequences for sedition and violent rioting and destruction of property and theft and breaking-and-entering and exploiting whoever was leading in there doing the worst, allowing them to get inside, too. There’d be NONE of this “I-was-just-walking-around” crap. And I’d look to see if there was any way to add attempted treason against the United States government and whatever else I could think of.

and just.

I'm in total agreement with this officer. This is shocking and frankly atrocious. How is it that overthrowing the U.S. government, killing and injuring government workers in the process of attempting to assassinate the vice president and members of congress of the United States not one of the most offensive crimes on our books?

Someone help me out with this!

I will say this, though. I'm not going to try to get into the mind of the prosecutors, nor make excuses: I'm not a lawyer, nor am a cop. But, I do know that prosecutors go for what they KNOW what they can get. So, my best guess is that they have hit these people with somewhat higher level charges in order to get at least these plea bargains.

Keeping in mind that the DC federal courts are now swamped with over 600 cases just from the insurrection, on top of the regular cases they had going before that. And IIRC, they (all federal courts) were backlogged due to budget cuts in years prior. There may be sympathetic prosecutors amongst the bunch, but I would hazard that the majority of the career professionals are simply trying to make the best of a no good, horribly bad situation. Just my two cents.
