He's a Republican. He's running as a Republican.
As for "all these Republicans getting elected in blue states", perhaps the question to ask is: why are they actually popular? It helps to defeat them if you understand what the voters actually think.
He talks like he could I guess, but what you say remains true. He's a republican and will likely run as a republican.
