the night of president Obama's inauguration, when Republicans met and made a pact to obstruct everything, to make everything political, to put party over country. That strategy has not changed since.

Reagan ran on the idea that "the government is the problem" then systematically went through and destroyed or severely damaged every department within government that benefitted the average, non-wealthy citizen. Meanwhile, the police powers of the Federal Government were grown (Military and Surveillance). The standard response of Republicans has been, break government, then go back and say, "See, government doesn't work" and blame Democrats because Democrats fundamentally believe that government can and should work to help improve people's lives.

This can certainly be simplified to a "let it burn" strategy, but as you said, there is a plan. The plan is to gain, and retain power, to discard democracy if needed, and to structure society as a strict hierarchy where Wealthy White Men make the rules and the rest of us service their desires in some capacity.

And Bill Clinton spent years cleaning up the huge deficits/debt left by Reagan/Bush (military) spending. By the time he left office Clinton was running surpluses and the national debt was expected to be retired within a decade. Then came Bush/Cheney and their GQP tax cuts and endless wars leading up to the 2008 financial crisis--saved by Obama.

When will they ever learn...

the Bush Tax Cuts were the first tax cuts during wartime in History. Not History of the U.S. but History of the World.
