Mike DeWine's son, a state Supreme Court Justice, is refusing to recuse himself from a lawsuit against his father over Ohio's awful, gerrymandered legislative districts.

They're looking out for themselves, not for us.

Ohio deserves better.

Underlying the whole process is trust: Will Ohio’s elected leaders justify the trust voters have placed in them to be honest executors of the voters’ will and of adherence to the law?

So far, legislative leaders are getting an “F.”

Now, with Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat DeWine’s jaw-dropping refusal not to recuse in lawsuits already filed over maps his father, Gov. Mike DeWine, not only voted to approve, but also publicly questioned -- meaning Gov. DeWine is a sure-bet witness in the case -- that trust level just fell into the basement.

Justice DeWine justified his refusal to step aside in these cases directly involving his own father by arguing they didn’t involve Gov. DeWine directly.

“He has considerably less influence over the [Redistricting Commission] than he would over a [department] of state government,” Justice DeWine wrote in a text message, cleveland.com’s Andrew J. Tobias reported. “Moreover, he is not [a] member of the legislature and the district lines do not affect him personally. As a consequence, there is no basis for me to recuse myself.”
