The ruling classes of this Muslim nation did not exactly want another western invasion, but if we insisted... Histories from around the planet are full of this stuff. People shouldn't assume we got nothing. Purchasing some degree of cooperation from corrupt rulers was undoubtedly less expensive in a number of ways than a real 20-year Afghan war.

Fwiw, this guy and his prominent family have obviously already been seduced by many aspects of western culture, which is a tried and true way of changing native cultures. Most like this have to live elsewhere now but not necessarily always.

It was after the real estate bust and a lot of Americans were out of work at home. We seemed to being following the game plan general be-tray-us started in Iraq. Buy them off and then tell the public how successful we were. It’s no surprise everything fell apart after we left.
