(66,274 posts)I knew what Steak Tartare was by the time I was six. If the diner didnt know what it is, they shouldnt have ordered it. Once they found out the hard way what it is, they should have ordered something else.
If stupid people dislike my mockery of them, they can choose not to be stupid

(1,969 posts)In my experience, insecure people constantly need to show that they are superior to others, whether they are or not, and they will often stoop to unscrupulous tactics to achieve this, the most common being to persistently mock, criticize, and put others down, the objective being to lower the status of the other person in the eyes of others, thus easing their own feelings of insecurity, and inadequacy. Secure people, on the other hand, do not have this need.

This is not the case. Im not the problem. The problem is with people who throw a fit over every tiny little thing in their lives that they choose not to educate themselves about.
If this was just helpless, if harmless, rage over the complexities of a world they refuse to understand, no big deal. But these people vote, and carry guns, and harass people they recognize as being better than themselves.
These people cause harm. I dont see any value in trying to understand them and feel sympathy for them.

(2,199 posts)What happened was that somebody that didn't know exactly what Steak Tartare was, ordered it. Believe it or not, most folks don't know what Steak Tartare is when they are six years old. That's a fact.
You're confusing stupidity with ignorance.

Still, if you're not sure what an item is, just ask the server. They'll tell you what to expect. They know that a good experience usually means a good tip and would prefer the customer get what they want the first time.

(58,785 posts)or educating in any but the most diplomatic way, and we've seen them all of course, it's not a fine restaurant. Plain and simple. And those who snear at ignorance aren't fully housetrained and should be kept out of sight and sound.
Imo, this one did a nice enough job by providing the dish requested, and with it an urbane lesson. Short of inviting the customer to choose another dish if he wished, which some fine, in the whole sense, restaurants might do.

(33,988 posts)But if I had, and actually tried to eat it to be polite, I'd have cleared the restaurant when the contents of my stomach hit the table.
Been there, done that, when my hosts served me partially cooked scrambled eggs, after I told them I couldn't eat the unless they were cooked to death. I tried to eat them after they went to the effort to make the eggs in a way they believed was inedible (i.e. dead as a doornail). I did, at least, make it to the bathroom.

My dad would always try to convince us that Army powdered eggs scrambled and mixed with fried chicken livers was an excellent breakfast. Maybe it was one of the better breakfasts when he was in the Army, but me and my siblings wouldn't touch it.

(24,326 posts)Some of the lyrics from the song Gourmet Restaurants:
Well a few months later some friends insisted we try out the Chateau Larieux
After waiting an hour and a half we finally sat down, and heck, I couldn't even read the menu!
So I asked the waiter, "How's the beef?"
He said "Ze steak tartar is ze best you ever had."
But when he brought it, friends I though I'd seen rare meat
But this wasn't even hurt real bad!
A couple band-aids and that boy'd been back out there grazing!
Well, I just couldn't eat that steak tartar, I was confused in every way. I wasn't even too sure about the soup du jour, I hear they change that every day!

(10,126 posts)and kibbe, which is a middle-eastern lamb version - should be made with finely chopped meat, not hamburger or ground beef. That way the texture isn't mushy. It is more work, though. Sometimes, when I have left-over rare beef I'll use the redder parts to make a mock tartar, mixing it with minced onions and worchestershire sauce.

(10,126 posts)it was called "aller retourner", and the formed steak tartare was put under a hot broiler for a few seconds on each side, long enough to form a cooked crust but leave the inside still raw. I've never seen it anywhere else, though.
Darn, now I want steak tartare for dinner, but it's a lot of work!

(23,315 posts)Strange bugs lurk in raw meat and raw egg yolks. It looked like the chef turned it into a steak omelet, yum.
Of course I also think sushi would be better if it were battered and deep-fat fried.
And don't get me started about raw kibbeh. Not a fan.
