Republicans should vote Democratic candidates into office."So, what we're doing this week at the Renew America movement is releasing a slate of those candidates, a slate of Democrats, Independents, and a handful of courageous Republicans that should be defended," said Taylor. "On the Democratic side, it's people like Elissa Slotkin and Abbey Spanberger, and in other places, we're going to suggest that progressives, patriotic progressives, support folks like Evan McMullin, who's running as a center-right candidate against Mike Lee in Utah. So, that sort of coalition campaigning is what we're trying to do, and it did work to beat Donald Trump and we've got to stick to that model."
He went on to say that he's optimistic but that it will be an "uphill battle." It's something that must be done, he said because "I'm worried that American democracy won't reach its 300th birthday if we don't do this."

But I also know the Romans still thought they had a Republic after Augustus and the Julio-Claudians took over.

(9,006 posts)America would not "go away" per se, of course. The sun would still rise in the east. Democracy as we know it might not last. And frankly, the democracy we have, as we know it, has not been all that fair or egalitarian to its own citizens, or peaceful with other nations. Our democracy sure could function better for the have-nots, but that is basically a clash between an economic system - capitalism - and a governmental system - democracy. Capitalism is dominant.
I still think we will save it from the barbarians at the gate.

(16,646 posts)The structure of our government gives the minority outsized influence in our federal government. It wasn't meant to be this way. The minority was to be protected against the tyranny of the majority. It was never imagined that the minority could actually control the government. As long as the federal government is structured upon a state structure that was created to protect slavery, despite the result of our civil war, we will see a federal government under the control of the minority. Currently, 50% of the senate is controlled by 30% of the population. In 20 years, 70% of the senate will be controlled by 30% of the population. Alabama has a population that tends to vote 45% to 55% republican. But they have 8 congressmen, 7 of which are the GOP. There is little to change this except for a Con-Con and the reality is that the GOP controls too many states in order for such a body to change anything.
We are screwed and I'm not sure anything short of another war will change anything. And the world has never seen a civil war within the most dominate military and economic country on the planet. Probably the closest was the British Civil Wars and the reality of that was a conflict between who was in charge, the people or the monarch. Here, we have a conflict between the minority and the majority. The problem is that the minority is in a position to establish that they are the ruling class. That class will tend to shrink, with the rules establishing that the minority has the right to rule, despite how small they become.
Unless we RE-establish that the majority rules, with respect and protections to the minority, we are screwed. I'm not sure how to get from here to there.

(975 posts)Jan 6 was provided the blueprint for the right wing coup. Biden will win the presidential election, but the repubs will use their majority in overturning the electoral college. The U.S will become just like Russia, a constitutional republic in name only.
