General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWent to Home Depot curbside pickup today.
Waited in my car and observed people going in and out of the store.
Was in the car for about 15 minutes or so. Saw maybe 70 to 100 people going in and coming out of the store.
Every single person was maskless. Every single one. As I sat there in my car with a mask on because I knew they usually come up to your car window and ask if you want them to load it in your trunk or just leave it near the car. You have to roll down your window and speak with them momentarily, so I had a mask on. Overkill? Maybe. Maybe not.
Also...I had the occasion today to view a photograph of a friend of mine. I viewed it on my phone. This friend was sitting with their friend, in an indoor public area, with their arms around each other, cheek-to-cheek, lips about two inches from their friend's lips, maskless.
What's it going to take?
What's the fucking problem here exactly?
EVERY person in and out of Home Depot is maskless? A person I consider to be intelligent, and I KNOW is a Democrat, putting their mouth close to someone's lips, a person they have not seen for years until today.
WTF

(507 posts)And, while it may seem to be overkill, when I go to the supermarket for curbside delivery, I always wear an N-95 mask, and I also exit the car before they come out with my stuff and determine the direction of the wind. I always stand such that I will be upwind of the delivery personnel.
Before folks assess this to be excessive behavior, consider that I am on anti-rejection drugs which dial the immune system way, way down.

(892 posts)I had to pick up the 40-pound bag of sunflower seeds and suet that I bought at Home Depot, and as I sat in my car waiting for those to be brought to my car I did exactly what you did. I observed people going in and coming out of the store. I saw not one single person with a mask on. Not one. I bet you there were 60-plus persons I observed in total.
I will never understand people. It drives me absolutely crazy.
I share your amazement. WTF, indeed.

(507 posts)is that when one examines the Daily New case and Daily Deaths curves, we are still at a point which is more serious than most times during the pandemic, except for the highest portions of last winter's peak.

(204,711 posts)The "honor system" has been in effect here in New York since July (just in time for "tourist season!). Until then, masks were required to enter any store or business since last year - and it was enforced. Requiring masks is the only way to protect against the unvaccinated.

they admire Donald Fucking Trump, that tells us all we need to know about their sense of HONOR
Can't believe no one was fired over that
If it had happened on Trump's watch...

(3,622 posts)...which is definitely not a blue state. Some of the local businesses don't enforce the statewide mask mandate but most of the large chains do, and even in highly Republican areas almost everyone complies because they don't want to get banned from a place where they shop frequently.

(11,686 posts)Home Depot and Walmart are the 2 best places to get dirty looks and glares for being one of those people who do wear a mask.
Lewis County is a bad place for being amongst the anti maskers and vaxxers.

It's still not too late

Luckily, I only need something from Home Depot a handful of times each year, and curbside pickup and home delivery have been helpful.

(744 posts)I think a lot of people believe they're potected by the vaccine and therefore don't need to mask. Of course, there's a lot more to it than that.

(1,393 posts)Plus, their website was down and there was no phone number to call so I sat in the car for about 15 minutes trying to log into their crappy site before having to go into the store.
Curbside pickup doesn't work very well if there's no way to let them know you're there, LOL.

(17,413 posts)In a separate occurrence, before Covid, I somehow managed to get a direct phone number to reach the store manager. I think the situation was something like I wanted to buy the last lawn mower they had in stock, and I wanted to buy it over the phone and give them my credit card number, and the freshly hired associate that I was speaking to said he could not do that, so he kept elevating the call until I got to speak to the manager who told me that of course I could buy it over the phone. Through that interaction, he ended up giving me his direct number.
I immediately placed his phone number in my contacts.
Once or twice since then I've called the manager and said something like "Yes, hello, I've been out here in my car for 9 hours waiting for someone to bring out my paintbrush".

I see 100% compliance when I go in stores here.
But the Triangle is the bluest of the blue areas of NC.
