(34,059 posts)As to the recipent - medical compliance is a big deal post-transplant. If you're going to claim religious exemptions for the vaccine, what's next - religious exemptions to the anti-rejection medications you will have to take the rest of your life?
As to the donor - this is major surgery that harms a healthy person No medical facility takes that lightly. There are numerous layers of screening (and restrictions) before you are allowed to be a living donor. it is major surgery that is harder on the donor than on the recipient - and the donor will be in the hospital for a number of days. It makes no sense at all to accept a donor who is at increased risk for COVID for a multi-day stay, weaken the body by removing half of her liver which, for at least a short time makes them more susceptible to the ravages of COVID. Not to mention that the liver is one of the targets of COVID.
I should add that my sarcoma surgery at the Cleveland Clinic was one of a handful of times I had been in a room unmasked with people who were not members of my household. They removed it for surgery and I awoke, unmasked in recovery. So in addition to the damage the surgery does, there is also the potential for signficant exposure during surgery and immediatly after (especially in a hospital in an area with a high concentration of COVID cases.

There are no stem cells used in receivng a liver transplant (aside from potentially similar involvement in R&D, production, or testing of anti-rejection medication).

Are they conflicted by this or is it a slam-dunk? No vaxx no-how. There are a lot of 'don't care' responses to this woman's decision.
I do care. I care about misinformation, about critical thinking skills being eroded. I care about people being subject to manipulative behaviour and influences that are harmful to their very beings. Maybe I care too much.

A large hospital system in Colorado says people on its organ transplant wait list won't be offered an organ if they refuse to get the COVID-19 vaccine, citing the "significant risk the virus poses to transplant recipients."
UCHealth, which operates 12 hospitals from its headquarters in Aurora, Colo., says it has long been standard practice to require many organ recipients or donors to get vaccines such as hepatitis B or the MMR shot.
The hospital system added COVID-19 to its vaccine list a few weeks ago ...

After two shots of the coronavirus vaccines, only a minority of renal transplant recipients some 35% developed neutralizing antibodies, new research conducted at the Sheba Medical has shown ...
The paper was published in the journal Transplantation, while the physicians are already working on a follow-up study considering the immune response after the booster, with possibly 86% developing antibodies ...
Renal transplants are a high-risk population for COVID-19 infection and complications, including prolonged hospitalizations and mortality, she noted. At the same time, these individuals dont respond well to vaccines. With the coronavirus epidemic, therefore, it was important for us to explore the response to the vaccine.
Patients who undergo renal transplants are prescribed immunosuppressive drugs after the surgery for the remainder of their lives, to prevent their immune system from rejecting the organ they received. This same mechanism interferes with the immune system's ability to deal with illness or to create antibodies from vaccinations ...

According to UCHealth, the majority of transplant recipients and living donors are now required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Neither woman has received their shots.
Its your choice on what treatment you have. In Leilanis case, the choice has been taken from her. Her life has now been held hostage because of this mandate, said Fougner.
Fougner says she hasnt received the vaccine for religious reasons. Lutali hasnt gotten the shot because she says there are too many unknowns. Until last week, neither woman thought they needed to be vaccinated for the transplant.
At the end of August, they confirmed that there was no COVID shot needed at that time, said Lutali. Fast forward to Sept. 28. Thats when I found out. Jamie learned they have this policy around the COVID shot for both for the donor and the recipient.

(49,445 posts)After all, who knows what's in anti-rejection drugs? I heard that Jeff Bezos has microwave-relay chips in the anti-rejection drugs that secretly tap into the Starlink data stream so he can track my armpit bacterial load, and also that they alter my DNA and make me a gay homosexual with Parkinson's disease and a club foot and they block out the word of God so I become an atheist!
And because we live in the worst possible timeline, I expect the above paragraph to be stated, earnestly, in public, and on camera, by a Q-idiot before Christmas.
