Thompson Statement on Cooperation of Witnesses -> https://january6th.house.gov/news/press-releases/thompson-statement-cooperation-witnesses
(from link)
Mr. Bannon has declined to cooperate with the Select Committee and is instead hiding behind the former Presidents insufficient, blanket, and vague statements regarding privileges he has purported to invoke. We reject his position entirely. The Select Committee will not tolerate defiance of our subpoenas, so we must move forward with proceedings to refer Mr. Bannon for criminal contempt. Ive notified the Select Committee that we will convene for a business meeting Tuesday evening to vote on adopting a contempt report.
The Select Committee will use every tool at its disposal to get the information it seeks, and witnesses who try to stonewall the Select Committee will not succeed. All witnesses are required to provide the information they possess so the Committee can get to the facts. Were grateful to the many individuals who are voluntarily participating and to witnesses who are complying with subpoenas, including several who met the deadline to begin producing materials to the Select Committee. Were moving ahead quickly to get answers for the American people about what happened on January 6th and help secure the future of American democracy.

(9,998 posts)Can someone explain the difference between what they're doing, and Inherent Contempt?
Is it simply that this way, it's the Department Of Justice that will hold them in Contempt, rather than Congress?
Is there any difference in the consequences, or the process, and what will come of it in the short to medium term?
Criminal contempt via the justice department can get stonewalled in the courts for a year or two. Inherent contempt ...
Bannon is marched of to the DC capitol jail immediatly and stays there until he complies.
The select committee can do BOTH of those things and they should.

(9,998 posts)So the route they're taking now, that all the optimists at DU seem to be overjoyed about, will go nowhere.

(9,998 posts)This is purely my opinion and speculation.
I've heard that if charges come out of the DOJ, they will be tied up in court for months, if not years. At the very least nothing will happen until well into 2022, if at all.
EVERYTHING involving TFG or his cronies seems to go nowhere. I simply don't see why this will be any different.
Trust me, I hope very much to be proven wrong.`

IF Garland's (We The People's) DOJ refuses to convene the Grand Jury the committee should issue Inherent Contempt right away.

(112 posts)IMHO .... they should cite inherent contempt today.

(6,873 posts)Bannon to Appear Before Congress on 10/14. When he doesn't show, Congress Should Use Contempt x 2
This video explores the novel concept of Congress using a legal "belt-and-suspenders" approach to enforcing its subpoenas: both referring Bannon for prosecution to punish him for his crime AND simultaneously using its inherent power of contempt to obtain the testimony the select committee needs to make progress in its investigation into the insurrection.

(9,957 posts)I really do not want them to get sucked into this "pretend" cooperation that these assholes are so famous for. Just get them before the committee now or send them for referral as well.

(1,000 posts)there is a reason TFG put him in the DoD after he fired Esper. Ever since he worked for Nunes he has been a waterboy bag o corruption.

(7,587 posts)So even thought it took two years to get from investigation to Nixon resigning, it happened because members of Nixon's own party were willing to hold him accountable.
In the current climate I am afraid that if we don't proceed swiftly it will go nowhere especially if the gop gets back in power. They will squash that.

(7,587 posts)Now they have to meet next Tuesday just to approve the report to send to DOJ. Likely it will sit there for days before a prosecutor takes it and then more days to be in front of a judge...
Who knows what will happen between now and then. I wish they would go ahead and just use inherent contempt. I wonder why they decided it was better to do it via a referral to justice. Is it because they are not sure inherent contempt is feasible or what ?

I honestly have little faith in our justice system, at least where "special" individuals are concerned.
It's going to take Inherent Contempt, no less, otherwise I see this being fought about in courts for months at the very least.

(15,214 posts)IMO the Dems should have already had a plan in place. Bannon and company are daring them to do something.
If something IS done, I will happily admit that I was wrong and be happier than a clam. But Ive seen this story unfold too many times over the last five years.
Im tired of not seeing these criminals in jail.
