Jesus, I thought we were past this uniion-busting shit. I'm going to boycott all Kellogg products.
Kellogg's, Keebler, Pop-Tarts, Eggo, Cheez-It, Club, Nutri-Grain, Rice Krispies, Special K, All-Bran, Mini-Wheats, Morningstar Farms, Famous Amos, Ready Crust and Kashi.

(51,584 posts)marched in it when the school district I had subbed in for 2 years, hoping for a teaching job, went on strike. When there finally were new positions available the teachers requested me at their school site since I supported them during the strike and they appreciated it.
Hollywood workers are probably going to strike now too.
ProfessorGAC
(64,990 posts)Not only wouldn't I cross the line, but in Illinois, subs become part of the union (IMRF) automatically.
So, I wouldn't, but I actually couldn't cross the line.
The school district would be in violation of labor laws if they brought in registered subs.
BigmanPigman
(51,584 posts)I got a contract. Also, teachers' subbing days are now added to the regular time contracted teachers get towards retirement.
When we went on strike a high school student put on a suit and got a briefcase and actually got accepted as a sub and was given a classroom. When news got out about this the strike ended soon afterwards. Most of the students were shoved into the lunchroom to do worksheets and coloring books for an entire week. Striking teachers got a lot of parent support.
ProfessorGAC
(64,990 posts)Need a degree here, unless one had an associates and was already a licensed sub. (Grandfathered those folks in.)
Even now, AA holders are limited as to how many days they can work in the same district in a term. (30 days, never more than 15 in a row.)
I'm "limited" to 90 days per term, but that's 180 school days a year in one district. I would be 93% of the way toward full time. I also have no limit on the length of a given assignment, but I wouldn't take a 6 or 8 week gig, anyway.
So, strike or no strike, around here no district could legally accept a high school kid as a sub.
BigmanPigman
(51,584 posts)The district was such a mess and so desperate for subs that they didn't check anyone's identity.

(32,078 posts)They mostly sell processed breakfast foods, like cold cereals, Pop Tarts, and frozen waffles, along with a couple of brands of cookies, crackers and fake meats. For various reasons, a lot of folks don't eat cold cereal for breakfast, myself included. Most of that stuff spikes my blood sugar, and leaves me hungry again 20 minutes after eating it. As far as meat substitutes go, there are more and more better options than Morningstar Farms soy products coming onto the market every day.

(1,166 posts)I rarely buy processed foods, and the few I do buy are either Trader Joe's or, occasionally, Kirkland/Costco brand.
When you account for its effects, the SAD (Standard American Diet) probably kills more people each year than all other causes combined. I want no part of it.
I'd love to be able to boycott Kellogg's, but you can't boycott a company that you already do no business with.

(4,394 posts)So some people don't eat Kelloggs products. I don't. It's not really a commentary on anyone else or what they choose to do with their lives. I stopped eating processed foods back in the 90s when I was on the Atkins diet. When I quit the diet, I'd more or less broken the habit and never got back into it. Also when I was broke after the Global Financial Crisis I got in the habit of cooking most of my food from scratch because I couldn't afford processed foods.
I don't think that makes me a "better person who only subsists on hand picked fruits and berries". It makes me a moderately health and budget conscious food consumer. "Processed foods aren't great for your health" isn't really that radical of a position at the end of the day.
You're doing a lot of heavy lifting with a handful of ambiguous phrases there.
Since we're all on the same side here, why don't you take a deep breath and think about why you feel the need to be so defensive on this topic. Is attacking other DUers because they comment that they don't eat that much processed food really the best possible use of your time and energy?

Pay Rank By Title In MFG Nondurable industry
Gary Pilnick
Vice Chairman, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer

Alistair Hirst
Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain
$3,059,590
Chris Hood
Senior Vice President, President, Kellogg North America
$5,104,919
Steve Cahillane
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
$11,663,852
Amit Banati
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
$4,381,061
It appears there is a total of 1400 employees going on strike for better wages, re instatement of premium healthcare, vacation time upgrades and other items.
Do you think the execs could trim a few bucks off their compensation to provide for the folks that do the lifting?
ProfessorGAC
(64,990 posts)In a $13.7 billion company.
The supply chain network & relationships have been in place for 80+ years.
There's no way the logistics & planning executive is that valuable.
And, the CEO make 3.8x that.
I retired for a company about 1/3rd the size of Kellogg.
The CEO had a total compensation package (listed in the annual report) of about 1/9th of Cahillane. Suggests to me he is overvalued by a factor of 3. Just that $8,000,000 could be spread to those 1,400 strikers at $5,700 per year, each.
CEO compensation is grossly inflated in the western economies.

Title: Production Associate
Description:
Kelloggs is Now Pre-Hiring for Strike Replacement Workers
Our ready-to-eat (RTEC) cereal production facilities in Battle Creek, MI, Lancaster, PA, Memphis, TN and Omaha, NE are pre-hiring for Hourly Production Employees. The Unions representing Kelloggs employees in these plants are on strike, and we are looking for employees to cross the picket the line and join hundreds of Kellogg salaried employees, hourly employees, and contractors to keep the lines running during the strike. Maybe we will see unions grow again, since labor is in shorter supply than it has been in years and the pandemic has made people consider the quality of their lives.
I think that people are also starting to notice that those "job creators" a. don't really "create" jobs and that they are screwing all of us.

I'll be giving my son who picks up our groceries a list of brands to avoid. Even at 35YO, he still loves his Pop Tarts and Pringles but will sacrifice for this cause. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to know who produces my Kroger store brand cereals.
It's unfortunate that most Americans either will not care or not even be aware of this strike.
