"I knew how deadly COVID could be so I went to my brother and asked him to please get vaccinated," Mike tells PEOPLE. "His response to me was to show different memes and stuff that he found on Facebook. He believed all that to be gospel truth and I could not change his mind.""The heartbreaking part was," he continues, "while [Kevin] was in the hospital, he asked the medical staff to give him the shot. They had to tell him it was too late."
Mike told The Free LanceStar that his brother first started to show symptoms last month, but was sent home from an urgent care center with cold medicine. A few days later, when his health had not improved, Kevin returned to the facility and tested positive for COVID-19.
Just a few days later, Misty, who was diabetic, also began to feel unwell and was soon hospitalized, per the newspaper.
On Sept. 22, Misty's family learned she had to be put on a ventilator and that her kidneys were only functioning at 50 percent, reported The Free Lance-Star.

They really shouldn't be "doing their own research" by looking at facebook memes.

(42,862 posts)Their parents didn't care. Why should I? This is how they should be remembered... as death-cult idiots who spread the virus and who perpetuated the lies, myths, hoaxes and misinformation. Willful ignorance and arrogant stupidity comes at a price. It's a shame that they occupied a bed that someone else needed to survive; put hospital staff at risk; used precious and limited medical resources.
The sooner that Covid wipes-out these idiots, the better off we'll all be. This needs to end now. Jerks like this are perpetuating the misery. I'm glad they're gone. Maybe someone else will learn a lesson and get their fucking shot and wear their fucking mask.

(9,998 posts)And it's a pathetic sign of the times, that people on a message board, care more about the long term well being of their kids than they did. I worry about what will happen to my dog if I came down with Covid and died. They sadly were so brainwashed that they put MAGA ahead of the own children, and it's fucking pathetic.

(13,909 posts)Americans arent smarter or dumber than any other countrys citizens. Our problem is a culture of anti-intellectualism. Its been noted by various sources since the 19th century. Im not sure how we change it other than really invest in our education system so people can think critically and not believe everything they read on Facebook and hear on Fox News.

This virus does not have legs. It doesn't have wings. It cannot move on its own. The only place it can go is where someone carries it. As long as folks keep hauling it around, providing it with fertile environments, it will keep killing and crippling. These stories are sad, but akin to a drunk driver who kills himself in a car wreck. You can only hope that someone else wasn't hurt by their irresponsibility.

(15,220 posts)I feel bad for the children. I lost a parent when I was very young and the scars never fully heal. Even with other caring adults stepping in, there are feelings of fear and angst and anger. Im in my sixties and I still have issues at times over this. Its human nature and reality. I cant imagine losing both parents at the same time.
I wish the anti-vaxxers would think about this.
