A Cincinnati police officer accused of mishandling sexual assault investigations is under investigation after an internal audit by his department brought his alleged actions to light, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Christopher Schroder has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of an inquiry from the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office over whether he effectively ignored DNA specimens collected in rape kits for sexual assault cases. Schroder, 52, had been with the Cincinnati Police Department’s Personal Crimes Squad, a unit that investigates sexual abuse cases, since 2007.

Authorities have not released details regarding Schroder’s alleged misconduct, saying only that the police department conducted an audit over the summer that discovered new information about the officer’s record. Schroder, a 22-year veteran of the force, was suspended in August for allegations that Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters deemed “incredibly disturbing.”

Deters told WXIX-TV, which first reported on Schroder’s case, that his office may review as many as 1,000 sexual assault cases that span more than a decade as a result of the inquiry.
