FBI Will Help Investigate Kidnapping of Missionaries in Haiti

BERLIN, Ohio—The FBI will help Haitian officials investigate the mass kidnapping of a group of American and Canadian missionaries and try to negotiate their release, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday.

President Biden has been briefed on the kidnapping, which Haitian officials say was likely carried out by a gang calling itself 400 Mawozo, and is receiving regular updates on efforts to free them, she said.

“The FBI is part of a coordinated U.S. government effort to get the U.S. citizens involved to safety,” Ms. Psaki told reporters Monday. “Due to operational considerations, we’re not going to go into too much detail on that but can confirm their engagement.”

Ms. Psaki added that the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince is coordinating with local authorities and providing assistance to the families involved. She declined to provide details about the individuals and their identities, citing privacy considerations.
