(5,936 posts)They never seem to use the same number twice, so hitting call block doesn't seem to even help..

One day a bottle would show up with a message saying -
We've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty.

(5,810 posts)We rarely answer and certainly not for unknown callers or withheld ID. But some are clearly identified as Scam Likely. We just laugh and let them rave on somewhere else. It is annoying but we just dont answer. They cant scam you if you dont talk to them. The mistake some people make is thinking you can answer and out smart them or just give them a piece of your mind. Dont do it. That wont work. But ignoring the call will. Eventually theyll give up. Or not. Maybe one day the people who can do something will help. But Im not holding my breath.
been getting calls the last couple weeks that will show up occasionally spam? on the phone screen and then the name or number. Never had that happen until recently. If I dont know the number I dont answer. I figure if it is important they will leave a message if it is someone who needs to get hold of me.

(16,284 posts)It's nice to be able to just ignore those. I wish my landline had that capability.
A lot of the scam calls I get on the landline show a phone number in my area code that I know is fake, because it also says "out of area." (I don't answer those, but they're still annoying af.)
If caller i.d. wasn't so easy to fake it would solve a lot of problems. The scammers have no incentive to stop as long as they can conceal where the calls are coming from. I have no idea what the solution is.

(5,554 posts)Either we finally get a bipartisan issue, or we get a hell of a good beating stick to bludgeon the Pubs if they block it.
Or Joe could get a federal agency to prioritize working on a way to stop these. It's a productivity problem and a quality of life problem

(7,817 posts)Zero. There are techniques that can be used.
Yes, i have a working phone. As it turns out, i am not in the USA phone system. The problem is in the US phone system.
ShazzieB
(16,284 posts)Do you know what is different about the US phone system that allows this or what would need to be done to change things? What are the techniques you alluded to? Are these things that individuals can do?
If you don't know the answers, that's fine. But if you do know anything helpful that you could share, it would be much appreciated.

(7,817 posts)1. Use WhatsApp or facebook messenger as much as you can.
2. i have heard of extra codes being added to phone numbers. Basically an extension.
A business phone system.
We need a more knowledgeable person for this.
3. I believe that landlines can be pinged somehow. This could be an inherent disadvantage.
4. Politically, visit your legislators.
5. there is a USB device and subscription whose name escapes me. you can plug in your landline into any internet enabled computer . Unplug anytime.
6. i urge people to call their phone company.
After this, i am on thin ice. brainstorming only

(7,805 posts)lapsed warranty on a car I traded in 20 years ago...burial plans ("you don't want your children to have to make tough decisions when you pass"...like hell I don't!)..United Healthcare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield (medicare part B)...and Medicare informing me the last 90 days of my life will be fully covered...what do they know I don't??)...the only reason I keep a landline is to ring my cellphone when I can't find it ...and you're right, it's got to stop!

(6,261 posts)We do have State Farm, and we did have a small accident a few months ago where we exchanged numbers, and the message even addressed my wife by her first name. But the generic language about "your claim" bothered me, so I looked up the callback number and it was a bit off from their national 1-800 number, so I called my local agent instead who confirmed she knew nothing about any claim and that this was indeed bogus.
So close! Ceaseless vigilance, people!

(14,061 posts)Its past time to give the Do Not Call list actual teeth. Spam and robocalls are, and should be considered as, harrassment and abuse of a utility.
I have a landline that was bundled with my cable and Internet. I dont recall the last time I got a legit call on it. I would drop it, but Im afraid my cable provider would fuck everything up so right now its not worth it. Caller ID is a godsend.
