https://www.npr.org/2021/10/20/1040238982/senate-democrats-are-pushing-a-voting-rights-bill-republicans-have-vowed-to-blocThe procedural vote to move forward with the Freedom to Vote Act failed despite Democrats' effort to craft a compromise bill led in part by Sen. Joe Manchin. The West Virginia Democrat had hoped to get enough GOP votes to overcome a filibuster, but in the end no Republicans voted to advance the legislation.
Democrats say federal voting legislation is needed to counteract a wave of new restrictions from Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country. Critics of those laws say they are making it more difficult to vote, particularly for people of color.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said a vote on the narrower John Lewis bill, meant to restore the Voting Rights Act, will come to the floor as soon as next week.

(33,643 posts)It sucks but ... I hope we re-focus on the most important piece of what the shitbirds are trying to pull in these new suppression efforts ... to whit, the ability of state legislatures to basically override the people's vote in various scenarios.
This travesty needs to be highlighted and a federal remedy campaigned for VIGOROUSLY in the public square.
What they're attempting really can't allowed, and we're on the side the vast majority of people will agree with, as long as we frame it properly.
It needs to be targeted though towards people coming to Washington, it gets stickier for the Feds to mess with state-level and below.

(6,008 posts)Honestly I'm a bit surprised that mcconell didn't authorize a couple of republican votes for it (not enough to overcome a filibuster of course), just to keep the scam going a bit longer that they aren't all beyond redemption.
