TFG Accused of Ripping Code From Social Network Mastodon for 'Truth' Site

The founder of Mastodon, which offers free open-source software that allows users to create social networks, said it appears that "Truth Social," the new social network created by former President Donald Trump, is based on his social media platform.

On Wednesday, Trump announced that Truth Social would be rolled out for some invited guests in November, and for all users sometime in the first quarter of 2022.

While Trump's social network has yet to launch, Vice's technology publication, Motherboard, reported Thursday that some users have already created accounts on the site, posting screenshots of the platform online.

Eugen Rochko, the founder and lead developer of Mastodon, said that based on the screenshots he's seen, Truth Social is "absolutely is based on Mastodon,"

"Well that looks familiar," Mastodon tweeted Thursday in response to a screenshot of Trump's social media site. The screenshot was posted by Mikael Thalen, a journalist with The Daily Dot, who said he managed to create an account on the new platform.

TFG took the code, and labeled it proprietary. The license says any user must distribute derivative works as open source.

We have decided that the main reason we had children is so they can handle our tech stuff.

Unfortunately, neither one is here right now.

it was created by tfg's team? Also, you'd think the disgraced ex-president could at least pay for his own unique platform. This once again shows how little he respects his fans and their security online.

There's nothing wrong with using open source code, but as usual, trumpCo misrepresented themselves. Most people would expect something more proprietary coming from an ex-president, ffs.

I have not and will not check out the site.

Is it likely that he paid someone else to write the code? Probably not, when it can be stolen so easily from another website for free. Bring on the lawsuits - shut him down.
