https://tennesseelookout.com/2021/10/22/covid-death-toll-among-tennessee-public-school-employees-rises/At least 27 employees have died to date, including three this month in Rutherford County
School counselors were on-hand at Walter Hill Elementary in Rutherford County as students and staff learned Thursday of the latest COVID death to impact the school system: a 49-year-old custodian, who had worked at other schools in the district before starting a new job at the elementary school in September.
The employee, Angela Dawn Crook, is one of three Rutherford County public school employees who died in October as a result of complications from COVID-19. Two other Rutherford County educators 51-year-old assistant football coach Garry Mooney and 46-year-old teacher Angela Baker Morton died earlier this month.
They are among the 27 Tennessee public school employee deaths as a result of COVID-19 since the 2021-2022 academic year began, the Tennessee Lookout confirmed.

(204,736 posts)Apparently not! There has been a mask mandate in all schools here since last year, for both in school and on school buses. The only change for the new school year was to rescind the mask mandate for outdoor activities. And yet there have been cases in schools here - young kids are not yet vaccinated. Between school shootings and rampant Covid cases, I'm sure glad I'm not in school now.

(57,073 posts)The county where Memphis is has a mask mandate in schools, much to the dismay of the qpuke legislature & gov.
Yet I see kids waiting at school bus stops with no masks! Personally, I would not allow them to board my bus.
This is beyond ridiculous! And these 27 covid victims are just since the start of this school year, which begins mid-August here, so 2 months...

(204,736 posts)I see them wearing masks when they're with their parents in the grocery store and in church when I went to that family funeral this summer. It's no big deal to them since they've gotten used to them - and everybody's wearing them. I think that's they key - everyone wears a mask so it's just normal to them.
Letting Covid run rampant in schools or other public places is just irresponsible, but then you already know that. I have thought so often what history will make of these governors who have inexplicably chosen to put their constituents - and little kids! - in serious danger.

(57,073 posts)They are everywhere here! 😳🤯😱
Even when 1 or both parents are masked, kids usually aren't!
As of yesterday, there have been 25,834 peds covid cases in this county! Perhaps not all are school age (k-12), but there are a total of 110,000 students in the County school system! Omg!

How can parents not care?
If my kids were young, they would be walking around in moon suits.
And this is a very blue county. I guess people here are just that stupid.
I was in a brief business meeting a month or so ago with my N-95 on. A seemingly nice man was facilitating. I walked in & the door closed.
1st thing he said was, "Oh, you can take your mask off in here."
Of course I declined.
He went on to tell me he had covid, is still suffering with long haul, & has numerous underlying serious health problems!
Of course I informed him natural immunity is no guarantee against reinfection. And, of course, he didn't take that seriously. 😳🤯
No words for the stupid here...
