Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsToday I placed my first "curbside pickup" order with Walmart. It was ready in about 10 minutes...
So I drove to the store and followed the curbside instructions.
In a few minutes a woman about 40 years old came out, masked up, with the order - 6 half gallon jugs of juice. Thankfully she used a cart, the only reason I didn't go into the store is that the order was too heavy for me to handle.
Anyway, she was really friendly, put them in the back seat, and checked me out.
Knowing how little Walmart workers are paid, I offered her a couple of bucks for her trouble. "Oh no, we're not allowed." I felt really bad, she was so nice and friendly, and they don't even allow them to make a few extra bucks?

(5,223 posts)You are encouraged to tip with that service and we don't have to carry heavy groceries upstairs.

(12,647 posts)The regular lady says she gets Customer Service worker pay with a bit extra because it's considered a bit more dangerous than being on the floor.
Hopefully, they do the same at Walmart.

(58,785 posts)The only difference in our experience is that, while we also want them to be apid a living wage for full time work, we don't consider them victimized by the dignity of not accepting gratuities. They've been uniformly cheerful and competent without that, but they do appreciate, and benefit from, positive feedback through the system set up to provide it. So we try to remember to do that.
I hope those who want to make more (minimum starting wage $12/hour) are either taking classes to upgrade their skills, or planning to, and/or working toward promotion within an extremely large company. Walmart itself pays 100% of tuition and books for associates who want to take classes from a limited list of specified institutions toward certificates and/or college degrees.
Also, if we, Democrats, have to delay "free" community college, we're working to expand Pell grants. Some skilled work pays more than some positions requiring college degrees.

(20,174 posts)I have a friend that works there who makes $17 an hour. The problem is that it can be hard to get in 40 hours if you want to work full time. It may have changed since the worker shortage, but it used to be that their average full time hourly worker only worked 34 hours a week.

(11,008 posts)They are always ready on time, their app is easy to use, and every time I go they are always waiting outside for me with the order.
Having worked retail, I was never allowed to accept tips either, but I do understand the desire to tip them, they deserve it.

(34,062 posts)I'm appalled at the tip jar creep.
Tipping shifts the burden of running the business unequally to those customers who feel guilty about what the owner chooses to pay, while other customers get the benefit of the owner being too cheap to pay a decent wage and customers who voluntarily try to make up for the owner being cheap.
Earning a living wage should not depend on the generosity of customers, which job duty you have for the day, which customer you get, or (in some restaurant/bar settings) how willing you are to to make yourself a sex object. We need to abolish the tipping system entirely (and require paying a living wage), not extend it.

(6,261 posts)I'm a reasonably generous tipper as a rule, but I have no trouble selecting a "No Tip" on the card machine when I order at the cash register and take the food away myself. Pay your workers better and don't rely on tipping to make up the shortfall.

(25,258 posts)Our local grocery store does not allow it.
This is a long standing policy that began with baggers who assist customers to their vehicle.
Tipping is not allowed for customer assistance.

(7,412 posts)I've had a missing item on at least 75% of the delivery orders I've placed. Their delivery people have a disorganized mix of loose groceries from multiple orders rolling around in their vehicles.
I've been pretty charitable given the climate right now, but that is unacceptable.

(16,829 posts)They fucked up almost every single week.
And I had already tipped them before I realized that they had screwed up.
They put my food in with someone else's order. They lost all the frozen food. They gave me shitty produce. They said my pickup was ready and half of it was missing. I had to ask for refunds over and over. I never got to speak to a manager. There was never one on duty.
They all accepted my tips.
Finally I gave up. Never again.

I, too, tried tipping the first time and was told no.
From my POV, so much cheaper than Instacart. In my little rural neck of the woods, Walmart jobs are pretty welcome things. Now that I occasionally go inside, I see many more curbside employees filling orders. I guess the tipping thing would have gotten complicated.

(11,097 posts)The local WalMart has the system working well. Most importantly, no one needs to go in the store with all the unmasked, unvaxxed, locals.

But this one was very heavy and I threw out my back a couple of weeks ago, so figured I'd try the "curbside". I would never order fresh food or frozen food online though. Too much could go wrong.

(11,097 posts)I feel like every time I go in a local business, I am taking my life in my hands. If I can do business outside in the open air, I'm all in.
There has never been a problem with frozen food - even ice cream. WalMart texts when the order is ready and we quickly drive out for the pickup. Of course, WalMart is ten minutes away - everything in our little town if ten minutes away.
