https://www.thedailybeast.com/comedian-dave-chappelle-addresses-netflixs-the-closer-controversy-by-mocking-trans-community-hannah-gadsbyChappelle also took the opportunity to complain about corporate interests, and what I can say and what I cannot say into a microphone, to uproarious applause. He said that, since the backlash, not a film company, not a movie studio, not a film festival, nobody will touch an upcoming documentary about his summer 2020 comedy tour. Thank god for Ted Sarandos and Netflix, the comedian added. He announced that he would instead be self-releasing the untitled film in 10 cities. You can see what theyre trying to obstruct you from seeing, Chappelle said. And you can judge for yourself. But you cannot have this conversation, and exclude my voice from it. That is only fair.

(10,150 posts)He's practically begging for it so he can say told you so. Dave just wanna say thank you for making our community a big goddamn target over the past month. I see transphobia all over the place now since your special. I didn't care for your words since I didn't let them effect me, but now you've opened a door for it to happen to us more now. So thanks a lot.

(11,584 posts)He doesn't feel relevant so he's trying to take advantage of the controversy to get attention. Its Howard Stern shock-jock schtick the difference is he's decided to trash an entire marginalized community of people to get his headlines. Fuck Dave Chappelle.

(18,745 posts)He doesn't get the hate and discrimination trans people get in our society, he doesn't get the violence that they face. And for some reason he continuously tries to compare that hate and violence to the hate and violence black people face in America.
He's playing victim when he's not a victim. Maybe meeting with some trans people can open his eyes some. For my wife's birthday this weekend, our dear trans friend Erica went to a sports bar / restaurant with us. There was a feeling of it being dangerous just her being in public. And she had to use the bathroom and got comments coming out of the ladies room. There were stares, there were under the breath comments. I was thinking, boy, am I going to have to fight someone if we get attacked. I don't think Dave Chappelle has ever experienced that in his life, but maybe I'm wrong, I haven't lived his life.
I also think that story in his show he told of befriending a trans person sounded too convenient. And it was similar to some racist saying, "but I have a black friend." Maybe that trans woman he knew is not representative of all trans people. Dave doesn't get it, but it doesn't mean people shouldn't engage him, maybe he'll eventually get it.
And no one is freaking canceling Dave Chappelle, he's not a victim in this. He's a filthy rich celebrity who's becoming more famous off the controversy.
Buckeyeblue
(5,491 posts)His point is that we as a society accept racism. We accept it daily. But when someone says something insensitive about the LGTBQ community everyone is outraged and people overreact.
He is essentially saying let the penalty fit the crime.
He's a comedian. He makes his observations in extreme, outlandish and sometimes profane ways.
It's art.

(5,491 posts)I don't think society accepts LGBTQ individuals. I think as a whole there is a lot of hate toward this group, with more acceptance among younger individuals.
Not that you asked, but I would give the same answer for our country's attitude toward African-Americans.
White straight people think the interests of these segments is being put ahead of their own.

(4,603 posts)This seems to be a big talking point any time the trans issue comes up, and I have to say, I think the reason a lot of people don't "get" it is because no one has any clue what it's referring to.
I personally know at least two trans people. I know that at various points in their lives, both have experienced isolated episodes of bigotry. But I've never heard of either of them being attacked, much less coming close to death. I suspect the anecdotal experiences of others are closer to mine than yours in this regard.
Yet whenever the trans issue comes up, one side immediately tries to shut down everything with insinuations of mass violence, apparently bordering on genocide, directed at trans people. And that just doesn't line up with what many of us see and experience. We're aware of the problems of violence against black trans women, but frankly, that seems to be isolated to certain communities where longstanding religiosity and regressive social views are equally hostile to gay men. That's not to downplay the problem, only to suggest that I don't think JK Rowling or Dave Chappelle have much impact one way or the other.

Hey Ted Sarandos! Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didnt drag my name into your mess, the comedian began. It only got more brutal from there.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/hannah-gadsby-goes-off-on-netflix-head-ted-sarandos-for-using-her-to-defend-chappelle
In a memo to his staff this week, Sarandos doubled down on his defense of Chappelles latest special The Closer following in-house protests from trans employees. We are working hard to ensure marginalized communities arent defined by a single story. So we have Sex Education, Orange is the New Black, Control Z, Hannah Gadsby and Dave Chappelle all on Netflix, he wrote. Key to this is increasing diversity on the content team itself.
Hey Ted Sarandos! Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didnt drag my name into your mess, Gadsby shot back on Instagram late Thursday night. Now I have to deal with even more of the hate and anger that Dave Chappelles fans like to unleash on me every time Dave gets 20 million dollars to process his emotionally stunted partial world view.
You didnt pay me nearly enough to deal with the real world consequences of the hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted. Fuck you and your amoral algorithm cult the Australian comedian continued. I do shits with more back bone than you. Thats just a joke! I definitely didnt cross a line because you just told the world there isnt one.

Her interpretations of things are a little different. She doesn't have the same filters that other people have so sometimes her comments are outrageous.
But it's the stand up comedian's job to be outrageous.
They shouldn't be canceled for that.
Jim Jeffries is another rather outrageous comedian. He was addressing the over sensitivity issue. He was talking about his father and how people need to give others some time to adjust.

(16,162 posts)The OP has residences in 4 different countries and currently lives in Sweden, so they may be missing some nuance when it comes to how played out this story is in US news cycles. It's very 2 weeks ago, even though Chappelle seems intent on keeping it going, which is probably smart for his bottom line, given that controversy sells tickets.

(53,833 posts)Yes, he has been and can be funny; that isn't the point. Yes, he is a member of a persecuted minority; it doesn't mean he understands the viewpoints of other minorities, of which he is not a member. With this latest whine, he is doing nothing more than painting himself as a victim; he is not! Honestly, this is starting to sound like a person who has murdered his parents going before the judge and pleading for compassion because, after all, he's an orphan now.

(10,150 posts)Being trans is different from being gay or lesbian. We are not seen as human to most people so it's not surprising some old schools dems here don't get it. They never would unless they sit and talk to us. What Chappelle did went and did cause an effect on our community. I've seen a lot more transphobic stuff than I have in a while
Behind the Aegis
(53,833 posts)We are dismissed. Our struggles are equated to "getting oily and wearing booty shorts". We have been blamed for elections losses. Attacks on our community are always by "some closet case who doth protest too much". The attacks we are seeing on the trans community are nothing more than a continuation of the attacks against the heteronormative cultures, and, sadly, there are those in the gay and lesbian community who don't see the writing on the walls...literally, in some cases.
