A lost hiker who spent 24 hours on Colorado's highest mountain ignored repeated phone calls from a search and rescue crew because they came from an unknown number. The unidentified hiker had set out on the 14,440-foot-tall peak on the morning of Oct. 18 but did not return to their lodging by evening, Lake County Search and Rescue said in a statement. That's when the owner of the lodging called for assistance, reports CTV News. Crews searched "high probability areas" on Mount Elbert from 10pm to 3am while calling the hiker's cellphone. Crews also left voicemail and text messages, the statement said. All went ignored. After a brief pause overnight, crews were again searching for the hiker on the morning of Oct. 19 when it was reported that they'd returned to the lodging around 9:30am, roughly 24 hours after setting out, per the Guardian. The hiker then told authorities that they'd lost the trail around nightfall and "bounced around on to different trails trying to locate the proper trailhead" during the evening, before finally locating their car, according to the statement. The person said they'd had "no idea" anyone was looking for them.
"One notable take-away is that the subject ignored repeated phone calls from us because they didn't recognize the number," Search and Rescue said. "If you're overdue according to your itinerary, and you start getting repeated calls from an unknown number, please answer the phone; it may be a SAR team trying to confirm you're safe!" In response to angry comments on social media, the agency did note that "what seems like common sense in hindsight is not obvious to a subject in the moment when they are lost and panicking.

Maybe he wasn't even really lost, he just wanted to be alone.

Next time rescuers should try sending text messages. That way hikers would know who the call is coming from.

(26,064 posts)And wasn't concerned. How would he know he was being searched for? He could have called or texted someone anyway -- texts would go through regardless. And, why didn't they text him, or have a friend or relative text or call him?
I wouldn't answer the calls either, I would be saving my battery.

(26,064 posts)I always do, even if I'm just going running around the neighborhood, but lots of folks don't, and, they have no legal obligation to, even though it's stupid AF.

(101,295 posts)"all fine, I won't be back tonight". Either he had explicitly said "I'm on Mount Elbert today, should be back by tonight" (most likely, since they knew to search that mountain) or he'd paid for his place that night and/or left stuff there, and that meant they saw him as overdue.

To my mind not thinking they'd be looked for doesn't quite cover it. At some point during hours of calls over the evening and into the next day, texts and emails also, a light should have gone on. Even a dim bulb.
Whatever. The article doesn't mention if they'll be charged for the search services.

(6,423 posts)I get texts offering to purchase our home, should I expect a fair offer?
I get texts that my AT&T account has balance, I have never had AT&T ofc.
They took email spam/phishing scams to phones, and yeah I play the only if expecting or family phone game as well.
I am expecting texts like this any day now:
Hey _____, this is Prince Amir of Scamistan what account do you want my gift of 25,000,000 USD sent to?
