A lot of people are shocked by this speech. That's a great example of how bifurcated social media has become in the last six months.
On the pro-Trump internet, they're on Day 3 of "Anthony Fauci kills puppies." It's inescapable. He's the new Soros/Hillary, an omnipotent villain.

(16,834 posts)or what passes for thinking in their case. The world is upside down and inside out with them. People who are drawn to that sewage-as-news are going to believe whatever those types put in front of them, whether it's that Fauci is Mengele or ivermectin is the cure for all that ails you. They're hopeless. All we can do is make sure the truth gets out there so the uninfected can know what is really going on.

(43,153 posts)People putting bullshit on social media and passing it off as news, and inevitably there will be someone who doesnt closely follow the news or politics and theyll just accept it as truth without any fact check.
Its extremely destructive.
So yes, I do care what they think, and tell others to think.

(16,834 posts)Facebook has started pulling some content that is untrue, but there are plenty of other places other than Facebook where these idiots congregate and swap stories. And Facebook certainly doesn't manage to pull all of the bullshit people post there. All any of us can do is read and post the truth where we can. It doesn't really do any good to get all upset over every piece of filth that gets posted on every godforsaken corner of the internet. Time spent reacting to this shit is time we could spend moving on to real news and issues. Don't waste time reacting, that's their goal, to make us feel we have to respond to every lie they tell, so by the time we get around to disputing it, they've dropped another pile of bullshit.

I fact check for the benefit of any casual follower who might otherwise take the false story for face value.

(16,834 posts)verifiable truth. They believe people like Alex Jones and Joe Rogan and they don't trust any fact checkers who tell them the truth about what these guys are telling them. So while it's admirable that you take the time to educate, your replies are falling on deaf ears. They believe what they want to believe, and they don't want to believe you.

(43,153 posts)Im not posting the fact check for the poster. Im posting the fact check for the reader.
There are a lot of people who only casually follow the news and are more susceptible to disinformation.
You leave it unchecked, you are conceding to the disinformation.
If you post a fact check, theres at least a chance the reader doesnt get sucked in.

(16,834 posts)on the fence and looking for information. In their case, your fact checks might be useful. But what I'm saying is that your fact checks don't have any effect on some of these readers. There is a certain type of 'news' that these people are drawn to. They're looking for sensational stories, the more outlandish the better. They aren't looking for stories that are objectively true, they want a strange tale.
It's hard to describe how these people think because it's so different from what we've seen in the past, where people used statistics and other data to prove their points in rational arguments. The Trumpers and their ilk want to feel like they're better than the educated because of their own feelings of inadequacy, so they gravitate toward stories that cast educated people and Democrats as not just wrong, but evil.
Most people believe things that have factual bases, but the Trumpers believe what makes them feel better. They have brought the sort of belief required for religiosity into their politics, so that their belief is untouched by any claims of irrationality or untruth. These people are not swayed by fact checks. They believe or disbelieve sories according to whether they fit their preconceived notions and their need to have convoluted explanations for events.
So I guess your fact checks might have some limited influence over readers, the people who need to hear the truth the most have already made up their minds about the story. So they believe the story if they like it and facts never figure into the equation.
