(5,620 posts)He leaves them stranded a few times in the cold, after campaign rallies. Those same crowds are shown in the news to his other supporters, Nationally and yet none of them ever complained about this treatment by his campaign.
Trump knows he can treat his supporters like dirt and get away with it.

(4,968 posts)Now, I love my mother, but the one thing that drove a wedge between us back in the day was the fact that she had the most amazingly insulting behavior whenever I tried to talk about reality. She had the ability to completely ignore what I was saying. There were times when she and I would be sitting in the kitchen literally having two completely different conversations, and no matter how I tried to steer the conversation to what I was trying to discuss, she would just ignore it and go back to what she was saying. This is the reality of the trumper. No matter what you say or how hard you try to point out reality, they will just ignore it. (To my knowledge, my mother is not a trumper, but she holds plenty of the same ideas when it comes to 'those people'. Sad that she was a career nurse with 45 years of triage experience (she is retired now) and yet cannot handle the reality of racial divides, or the classism running rampant in our society.)

(11,679 posts)When she stated that "Hillary was a bad candidate." Now Hillary was not perfect but Hillary was one of the most experienced, accomplished, and morally centered Presidential Candidates ever. Mom was my last connection and hope.
The rest of my family is a bunch of Trump humpers, for the most part, and have little to do with them now. I had a great childhood and a happy life. But this is so serious that I have essentially given up that part of my life so as not to endure the reality that my brothers and sisters have not evolved and mostly degenerated as they aged.
Mom died not long ago and I miss her. She passed with things unchanged and unforgiven.

(4,968 posts)Losing family members to 'chosen insanity' is never easy. But, one has to do what one has to do. My childhood was filled with manipulations and machinations, and she still prefers to act like none of that happened. But, she is my mother. I usually put it this way: I love my mother, but I do not like her. And, I am sure the feeling is mutual.

(35,427 posts)Because of this phenomenon we have with trump supporters, I've been listening for stories about people who live their lives completely divorced from reality and who are not necessarily trump supporters. Your detailed description of your mother is, therefore, of interest to me.
I have a friend who has a friend like this. I know this person, too, but not as well.
I started some research on the topic. I think you might find it interesting that psychologists theorize that it's a defense mechanism against events and people they find threatening.
I hope to write more tomorrow when I'm not so tired. I'd like to describe this person (we'll call her Jane).

(17,505 posts)Who literally said today that she did her own research on the vaccine and wont take it because its not safe. She said people are dying of the vaccine. Of course I told her that that is false.
This is a woman who couldnt find her own ass with both hands in any kind of lab, could not even find never mind read actual journal articles though Ive told her how.
Your brief explanation makes a great deal of sense and really resonates with me. I very much hope I get to read what you wrote. If its not too much trouble Id be thankful if you could shoot me a link in the DMs because I will likely will miss it.

(239 posts)I love my brother. He is a great guy and would give you the shirt off his back. But he got indoctrinated into the Trump cult. (As an aside, my dad was a Trumper too but he died in 2019.) Anyway my brother and I are complete opposites when it comes to politics. We have had some very heated arguments about Trump and Biden. But he lives in a completely different reality. To him, Trump was the greatest President ever! A moral man, who loved America, was a business genius and "made America great again." As for Biden, my brother is convinced that the President is a "hard-core Marxist" who is demented, hates America and wants to turn us over to Chinese rule. No amount of facts can change his mind. When I point out all the dumb, hateful, crooked stuff Trump has done my brother claims it a 'lie" put out by the "Marxist media". I can't begin to tell you frustrating it is to argue with someone who denies reality! It's like we live in two different universes. I think he has gone too far down the Trump rabbit hole to be saved. To save our relationship we agreed to stop talking about politics otherwise we would have ended up totally estranged. I wish Trump had never been born. He has caused so much hate and division in this country. Trump is a horrible human being and a total POS. But my brother eagerly looks forward to Trump running in 2024 and plans to vote for him again. I hope Trump has a massive stroke before then because I fear what another Trump Presidency would be like! Can you "fascist dictatorship" boys and girls?

(14,516 posts)Remember when Grover Norquist said the ideal is to have a dumb president who would merely act to sign legislation sent to him by a Republican congress?
This has been going on a long time, and the war is actually this republic - and its representative democracy - against corporate capitalism and oligarchs. That is what it has always been.
We are a shithole country because policies for the last few decades have stripped our treasury and given that money to billionaire oligarchs. We squander $4.2 trillion on forever wars, we pass irresponsible tax cuts that cost trillions, we fritter away our treasure on drug wars and private for-profit prisons.
WHERE IS OUR HEALTHCARE??
WHERE IS OUR AFFORDABLE COLLEGE???
WHERE IS OUR INFRASTRUCTURE???
And why are Americans too stupid to see what is going on right in front of their faces?
Oh, that's right. The 1971 Powell Manifesto that laid out the roadmap for the oligarchs to privatize, deregulate and gut the New Deal. Yep. Reagan killing the Fairness Doctrine. Deregulation of key industries. Dumbing down schools. Buckley vs. Vallejo. Citizens United. Free trade - we still lose around 300,000 jobs a year to outsourcing of key business functions offshore, did you know? Reality TV catering to the lowest, most base. Expensive college and massive student loan debt.
All this is to make us fear, to make us slaves to debt. This entire 'free market' capitalist society is based on economic slavery.
It is all a matter of priorities, people. How do the people we elect to represent us spend the tax money we pay in?

..Cipolla states we underestimate the number of stupid people in the world. He goes to sort people into 4 groups: Helpless, Intelligent, Stupid, Bandits-- goes on to conclude that the most dangerous group is the stupid group bc they will do something without gains to themselves. (Reminded me of those who participated in insurrection on Jan 6, or those not supporting bills that will help them; or nonvaxers, covid19 deniers that are literally killing themselves. People whom are willing to fall on their swords for odious-traitor#45, man who doesn't give a #$## about them. After reading a few articles on topic, listening to lectures on said--it is clear that we are on a very dangerous path. Animated nous video @link.
