(146,285 posts)Truly, it would be a good replacement for the current flag.
It does need stars for Alaska and Hawaii, though, in appropriate positions.

(30,613 posts)Pretty much the popular condensed positions. And very tiny.

(32,626 posts)It's well-known, it's a catchy tune, and it's in my voice range.

(28,462 posts)A national anthem should reflect the name, and we are (supposedly) a secular nation. This Land is Your Land might be better, though it's also kind of tone deaf to the Native American POV. Still, anything would be better than the war-glorifying crap of a national anthem we have now.

(16,357 posts)...but if you want to avoid religious content, it may not fill the bill. Take a look at the full lyrics (and note the bolded portions):
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
Like I said, I love the song, but it is not devoid of religious content.

(522 posts)but the conservatives would never want to change the anthem, and since they make all the rules in this country it won't be changed.
(This land is your land, this land is my land)

(86,524 posts)Especially if the preamble is included.
Preamble
[Spoken Introduction:]
"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. "
[Song:]
God bless America...
So I got this from a site about Kate Smith but I recall music to accompany the lyric to the preamble because I've sung it in public.
The original written in 1918, preamble added 1938 in response to the rise of fascism in Europe.

(265 posts)... the greater the political power of the people in that state. Montana, for example, gets way more senators per person than we in Illinois do.
LastLiberal in PalmSprings
(12,581 posts)It took me a while to find it.
The most interesting thing is knowing that each star gets two senators. That really screws those of us who live in California, whose giant star is eclipsed by W. Virginia'a, which has the same number of senators as we do. It really sucks having such disproportionate representation in the Seanate.
