(Bloomberg) -- The White House is stepping up pressure on congressional Democrats to finalize at least the framework for a deal on President Joe Bidens economic agenda on the eve of the presidents departure Thursday for a series of meetings in Europe.
Senior White House officials met on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning with key moderates Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, following up on the senators session with Biden Tuesday night. Biden needs the support of all Democrats in the evenly divided Senate to squeak his social-spending and tax plans through that chamber.
Biden is also keeping the door open to a meeting with Democrats on Capitol Hill later Wednesday to discuss his agenda, a White House official said.
The president has hoped to have the contours of a deal worth as much as $2 trillion in new spending for social and climate programs, before a climate-change summit begins in Glasgow next week.

Biden closes in on deal with Manchin, Sinema as liberals wince
Joe Manchin said he and Kyrsten Sinema can absolutely agree to a deal Wednesday on President Joe Bidens domestic agenda, delivering Democrats a major momentum boost after months of dragging debate.
Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Sinema (D-Ariz.) are meeting with senior White House staff on Wednesday morning after sitting down with Biden on Tuesday evening to hash out remaining obstacles to enacting the party's once-lofty social spending vision. But it's far from clear that what passes muster with Manchin and Sinema can alleviate House progressives' resistance to taking up the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill this week absent a more concrete accord.
Manchin said that his hope is to reach a rough framework all Democrats can agree on, counting on their negotiations in good faith about a forthcoming bill are enough to unstick the Senates infrastructure bill.
The president has made that very clear: He wants to move forward. And we owe it to the president to move forward, take a vote on the infrastructure bill, its the only thing we have thats bipartisan, Manchin told reporters on Wednesday morning. Hes working as hard as he possibly can to get a good solid deal. He believes 100 percent of nothing is nothing.

(15,206 posts)...that if they vote for the bipartisan bill first, no amount of "good faith" is going to keep them from getting screwed on the reconciliation bill. A mere "framework" for a future vote isn't going to guarantee squat.

I'm curious what their motivation is in saying "My fellow Democrats are lying to me."

(16,095 posts)before the reconciliation bill, there will be no reconciliation bill.
Heck, there might not be one anyway.
I expect a Kyrsten Sinema "cutsie" moment as she gives it a thumbs down after agreeing to an eviscerated bill.

(54,365 posts)Not everybody will get what they want, and those that don't will be yelling and screaming, as if they had been betrayed by Benedict Arnold. I believe Biden, like each of the Democratic Presidents of the past century, has the best of intentions, and is getting a heavy dose of reality when staring his real possibilities in the face.
Any realistic Democrat knew that when Biden took office, he would be facing a gale force wind in his face. Anyone who thought that wouldn't happen wasn't watching TV on January 6th. The facilitators (though not the financiers) of the Capitol mob entering the building are all sitting in their offices in the House and the Senate, smirking. They may sacrifice a few of the most offensive perps among them, but most of them will get away with it, and we all know it. To think they would be any more accommodating with legislation required a lot of wishful thinking, most of which will not be rewarded.
