Remains found in a Southern California desert have been identified as 30-year-old Lauren "El" Cho, a New Jersey woman who was missing for months, authorities said.
Her cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said Thursday.
The remains were recovered on Oct. 9 during a search for Cho "in the rugged terrain of the open desert of Yucca Valley," the sheriff's department said. Cho was reported missing on June 28 "when she reportedly walked away" from the Yucca Valley home where she was staying, the sheriff's department said.
The search for Cho was launched this summer and included planes searching the remote mountain terrain and canines scouring the area for evidence, the sheriff's office said.

(86,572 posts)A friend of mine went missing this September and still hasn't been found. His brother, who was with him on a back country trip, was found within 48 hours of their being reported as missing. It's agonizing to say the least. To have family missing is just horrid. Been there done that too with one of my siblings.

(8,052 posts)I am such a worrier, if my kids don't text back within a half hour (and they're adults!) I start getting anxious. Cannot imagine what these families go through.

(86,572 posts)Actually I think it was actually late August, two full moons have passed since.
It is awful. In some ways, those of us who know/knew him are of a mind to think that if he is dead, his end was probably a better end than growing old and watching everything fade. He's 74 so there's that, he had an amazing and full life. It just sucks to think I'll never get to talk with him again. I am sure his family is agonizing over it still though his son did offer the sentiment about his passing that way rather then another. The guy had phenomenal skills, retired from 20 years with NPS as was his brother, they were very experienced but I suspect the storm that passed through on their second/third night out was what got them. I live about 100 miles north of where they were and it was a really bad storm, they were on a lake with unhikable shoreline, just bad timing.
The not knowing is the worst part.
