General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe President's party ALWAYS loses the VA gov race the year after a new president takes office
This year is no different than 1977, 1981,1989, 1993, 2001, 2009, 2017.
People are overthinking this WAAAY too much.
In fact, this may be the narrowest Democratic loss in 40 years.

(42,700 posts)But after Corey Stewart, Ken Cucinelli, Jim Kilgore, the Virginia repubs figured out that putting up another crazy in a statewide election wouldn't work, so they went with someone who looked more the part of a mainstream republican -- one who could appeal to suburban Republicans and independents.

One year later, Chuck Robb (D) won the Virginia governorship by 10.

(972 posts)Because you know what is another one? The President's party losing seats in the midterm. That has happened in almost every midterm election in the last 40 years, save for 2002.

(15,951 posts)that the Democrats have acted for the last six months or so like they can't do anything or get anything done. They look weak. Biden's approval ratings are rivaling Trump's. Virginia was bad enough--despite the narrowness of the losses--Dems are going to lose every statewide race and possible the House of Delegates. What's worse is that New Jersey, which may yet go Democratic for Governor, is also so close. Nobody expected that. The electorate of these two states took out their frustration on Dems. Dems stayed loyal to Dems that is the only thing that has kept these states close, but Republicans in outer burgs and rural areas voted in high numbers and INDEPENDENTS deserted the Democratic party. Thank goodness Biden and the Dems have a year to try and save themselves from another disaster.
