got my family hooked on power bars. but, we get hooked on one and then they quit selling. i am all the time buying different bars to see what we are going to get hooked on next. my husband came into the kitchen the other morning to get his power bar and then off to work.
ya, he says, made for women.
what? i say in confusion????
he says, this power bar, see, it is made for a woman. we laughed cause we had a big old "to do" over the diet (ooops, 10 cal) dr pepper. i love the ad, but i am suppose to be outraged cause "it is not for you women. it is for man". hubby swore they were saying for women. not. he always sees women drinking it.
he put it back in the drawer and got a different power bar.
when i realized what he did, i laughed. not gonna eat it cause it says made for a woman? really?
today, my youngest son came in to get a power bar. ya mom, i see how it is, made for a woman. i laughed. BUT.... he put it back in the drawer and got a different one.
HEY... i said to him. you arent going to eat it cause it says that. do you think it will turn you into a woman? i told him, i am not eating cause it is patronizing. who the hell is going to eat this power bar.
(betcha my oldest son will. he isnt afraid)

(27,310 posts)The sugars are malt extract, brown rice syrup, organic cane juice listed twice (in the coating & in the lemon flavored nuggets).

(110,159 posts)different bars. thanks for that.
Luminous Animal
(27,310 posts)Many would look like this:
1) Sugar (malt extract, rice syrup, cane juice)
2) Flours (soy flour, rice flour, wheat flour)
Etc.

(26,068 posts)Or someone doing alot of exercise, to replace calories you've burned off running, hiking, kayaking, etc. You need approximately 110-200 calories an hour after you do something like this for about 45 minutes+. The easiest way to do this is via an energy gel, sports beans, or an energy bar like a Clif or Luna (the same company makes both). They have all of that sugar-based energy for a reason, all of the gels or bars or beans or honey-filled wafers do. People shouldn't use these as a snack or as a meal replacement, because they aren't meant for that.
CLIF also makes protein bars, but the Lemon Zest is an energy bar. They are also delicious, and thus palatable.
Also, Luna Bars are formulated specifically for women who are expending alot of energy. They have higher amounts of iron and calcium, and fewer calories than other energy bars.
I didn't mean to do on so long -- sorry! Just explaining why they have so much sugar.

(110,159 posts)well. then it was good the oldest son ate it, he came back from track practice, lol.
that is good to know. he eats a lot of them because with cross country adn track, he has early practice and cant get a breakfast. then practice in afternoon. i will remember what you say. thanks
obamanut2012
(26,068 posts)And is a teenage boy, he needs the energy!
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)he works pretty hard at being balanced. i am not worried about him. but especially in cross country season, i appreciate your information and will focus more on what you are saying, when i find things for him to eat

(110,159 posts)Evil. Why? What have I ever done to you. Hey, I have cheerios with 2% milk every morning. How bad is THAT for me.
Teasing. I don't care. What, sugar bad for a person?
Luminous Animal
(27,310 posts)I apologize that supplying factual information came off as mean.
And yes! sugar is bad for a person... have you ever heard of diabetes?
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)Considerate and helpful. I wrote I was teasing and I was.
No, I don't have diabetes. Family, and it is very hard on her.
Thank you. I did appreciate the info

(27,310 posts)When, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, one of the main things that I was told to look for was added sugar. Unfortunately, there is sugar everywhere!
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)Sigh... I try to eat healthy. Moderation. But as you say, it is everywhere. I have rally given up. I hear ya.
It seems if it is not one thing, it is another. The food we get is a mess. I don't trust any of it anymore.
obamanut2012
(26,068 posts)The CLIF company even tells people that, and that children shouldn't eat a whole one, even if hiking, etc., and not to use them as a meal replacement. That's the consumer's fault, not CLIF's or Power Bar's
Almost all CLIF products are organic, etc., and many are vegan, which is why they're sold in places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Lara Bars are usually quite high in fat and/or sugars, too.
When I saw the OP subject "Luna Lemon Zest" was the picture that came to mind, probably because I buy them for myself.
obamanut2012
(26,068 posts)I bought them by the case.
Lemon Zest are my favorite after the Chai.

mike_c
(36,281 posts)...as men and women don't have significantly different nutritional needs, at least not at the level provided by power bars, LOL. So the bar itself is no more a "woman's product" than it is a man's-- but presumably more women choose them simply because they're marketed with "made for women" on the label. It's just a labeling attempt to capture a segment of the market for power bars.

(21,691 posts)My husband loves Larabars (por femme) and Cliff Mojo (por dudes) and while shopping, ive noticed the "lady bars" largely have the lowr calorie/carb count prominently displayed.
Larabars are pretty delicious, by the way. Especially the cashew cookie ones.

(110,159 posts)and wild berry power bars. the wild berry was the best. every afternoon. the grocer that stacks that dept saw me coming. she said, i knew you were going to be a problem. oh my heart broke. i cried for ten minutes while she consoled me.
Gormy Cuss
(30,884 posts)I don't buy that many power bars but those and Luna Lemon Zest I buy because I like the flavors and I know the Larabars have a better calorie/carb profile than many other bars.

My concern about it (if I weren't checking out soon ) is the fact that it has zero fiber and relatively high saturated fat to unsaturated fat ratios. And a fair amount of it's carbs are in sugars.
