I just warned the Unitarian Church what the black flag means that their neighbor is flying. They get vandalized a lot - every time they put up their rainbow flags and other inclusive signs.

This feels different. This is Trump, Mike Flynn, Steve Bannon, and Madison Cawthorn readying the Q Qrazies and far right extremist nutcases for local violence against their own neighbors.

WTH is happening to this country? It's like the effing Twilight Zone all of a sudden. Well, not really all of a sudden, it has been creeping up on us over the past number of years but it seems to be accelerating and it is now quite alarming.

This is a very large and diverse country, and some things that are very common in one area may be unheard of in another. For example, when my daughter was a teenager, we took a trip to see an old friend of mine in Arkansas, and my poor kid was completely freaked out by all the confederate flags on people's cars and such. I felt bad that I didn't think to warn her about that stuff (but proud to have raised a kid who was so appalled by it). It just didn't occur to me to prepare her for it, I guess because my husband and I have spent enough time down south that we just take that stuff for granted when we're down there. It didn't occur to me how it might look to a 17 year old who had spent most of her life in the Chicago area.

Getting back to the black flags, I don't think I've ever seen one of those myself, and I would love it if someone would be so good as to explain exactly what they are and what they mean. Among other things, I'm not even sure if we're talking about a flag that is solid black, or if "black flag" s shorthand for something else. I tried gogling "black flag," but the results were confusing.

I've done some more googling, and I'm still confused about what they look like, because I've found so many variations. I've found everything from flags that are so dark you can barely see the stars and stripes, while others are black and white or black and gray (with black where the blue and red would normally be). Do these all have the same meaning/significance?

aside from the birds everywhere, the beautiful morning, Shaw's Creek burbling away next to the trail, we passed by lots of yards with TFG flags - and right next to them, American flags.

It may not be happening everywhere in the country, but the US flag is being hijacked by TFGers - equating patriotism/support of our country with support of TFG. It's pretty scary - seems to be some covert sort of inner circle/club thing going on.
