The House select committee investigating the Capitol attack is likely to decide this week whether to charge Mark Meadows, Donald Trumps final White House chief of staff, with criminal contempt of Congress, a key panel member said.
I think we will probably make a decision this week on our course of conduct with that particular witness and maybe others, Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and chair of the House intelligence committee, told CNNs State of the Union.
Schiff also said he was concerned about the Department of Justice, for a perceived lack of interest in investigating Trumps own actions, including asking officials in Georgia to find votes which would overturn his defeat by Joe Biden.
The 6 January committee is investigating the attack on the Capitol by supporters who Trump told to fight like hell to overturn his defeat.

I love Adam Schiff, but ".....we will probably make a decision this week on our course of conduct...."
????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe if Congress stayed in Washington for a few weeks, they could get this task on the to-do list?

(13,470 posts)Youre also right about taking so much time off. A week off for Presidents, a couple weeks at Easter, etc. Unfortunately its been this way for many years. It needs to STOP right now.

Trust that they know what they're doing. I do.

(9,998 posts)You never know, he might be visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley some night, and decide to show up.
If that fails, a 2nd strongly worded letter should suffice.
I realize Meadows has been saying FUCK YOU in response to his subpoena, but it's still within the realm of possibility that he'll change his mind. And it would look bad if we didn't give him several extra weeks to reach that point.

(8,318 posts)The one guy who has a potential claim of Executive Privilege in this is the former Presidents COS. This is the type of court battle that will draw out. I know, only the current President can claim the privilege, but the way to fix this is to have him come in and Claim the 5th in public. I know these people are incapable of shame, but still.
If this turns into a multi year court battle, and I think it will (did not go to law school, but have served people before) the House may well be gone before it is out of the courts. Take as much low hanging fruit as humanly possible and keep building the best case possible.

(2,252 posts)..is a bullshit justification for ignoring a subpoena or refusing to testify; and everybody knows it. I believe at least two judges have already ruled it isn't applicable simply because Trump isn't president and the testimony sought by the Committee isn't "information that would impair governmental functions" or threaten national security.
The Committee is seeking to discover information relative to an unknown number of people who sat in a War Room, scheming to obstruct certification of a national election which would have certainly "impaired governmental functions." To say it in more explicit terms, the Committee wants to know who all helped Trump with his attempt to overthrow the government and eventually nail Trump as the primary instigator and perpetrator of the failed cóup...
It's beyond my comprehension why the Committee is so cautious with their enforcement of the subpoenas unless it's fear of future reciprocity from Republicans...which is about the same as not pushing to kill the filibuster. They finally got what may well be one shot at bringing Trump down and need to make it happen. Issue the damn subpoenas and when they don't show up, write up the contempt charge and send it to DOJ. If the witnesses want to plead the fifth, fine. Then you know they got something to hide.
I ain't been to law school either but somebody has got to make somebody accountable and there has to be some way to do it.

(8,318 posts)One way to expedite it may be for Justice to charge the former President. The criminal nature of Watergate helped to force the judiciary. I ( again non lawyer but victim of 1/6) feel that there should be criminal charges brought.

(2,252 posts)..they ain't already charged him. But, if you do the Google search, you find some explanations...
Then, there's the DA in GA investigating him for election tampering (whatever the term) and he's on a taped conversation telling the Secretary of State to find 11,000+ votes...how much evidence do you need?
I guess it requires the law degree to understand...

(2,252 posts)..the Feds/DOJ won't move until they are reasonably confident in a conviction. So, I guess they are still looking for an undeniable, irrefutable smoking gun.
