A student shot in the neck during the Oxford High School shooting and her family have filed a lawsuit against the school district, claiming school officials did not do enough to protect its students.
The federal suit on behalf of Riley Franz, 17, and her family is seeking $100 million. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger said in a news release that he intends to file two suits on Thursday morning.
Oxford Community Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday morning.
Riley and her younger sister Bella, also named in the suit, are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the claim. Bella "narrowly escaped the bullets" and watched her sister get shot.
The suit follows one of the deadliest school shootings in the United States since 2018. Fifteen-year-old Ethan Crumbley is charged with tearing through Oxford High School with a handgun on Nov. 30, killing four students and wounding seven others in the school, including a teacher. Crumbley is in the Oakland County Jail.

They need to sue the asses off the parents, too. Quite telling who the parents have retained as an attorney (holding nose).

(6,220 posts)Let's see... that's mostly punitive damages. The lawyers, who of course asked for that amount, would get a third. Nice change.
Even if the award is cut down quite a bit, it's still a chunk of change for the lawyers. For using a tragedy to line their pockets.

(53,726 posts)I'm glad they're suing. All the other victims should sue the hell out of the killer's parents and school administrators too.
Unbelievable that they sent that kid back into the classroom after meeting with him and his parents just before the shooting...after all the red flags given off prior. And they didn't search his bag where the gun was.

(53,726 posts)mistake again after coughing up dough. They'll probably lose their positions anyway for being so lax.

(21,525 posts)You get a settlement and they get paid for their services. Nothing wrong with it. People are free to not sue if they dont want to pay a lawyer.

(395 posts)for emotional injury. Maybe then the state of Michigan will wake up and enact laws requiring firearm owners to properly secure their weapons and hold them strictly liable if someone takes one, with or without their consent, and uses it to commit a crime. No more giving it to a relative either and saying that you had misplaced it (wink-wink) when they or someone else is found with it

(11,864 posts)Do you think having that law would have had any effect on legal action against the school system ?

(1,327 posts)like this?
I assume the administrators, who were acting on behalf of the school district, might lost their positions, but will not have pay any judgement.
So if they win, does it come out of the district's general budget (i.e. the taxpayers pay) or somewhere else?
