Girl Scouts Organization Defends Inclusion of Transgender Members Amid Calls for Boycott of Cookies

from AlterNet:

Girl Scouts Organization Bravely Defends Inclusion of Transgender Members Amid Calls for Boycott of Girl Scout Cookies

A teen Girl Scout named Taylor posted an eight-minute video online protesting the Girl Scouts for allowing a 7-year-old transgender kid from Colorado to join the organization last year. Taylor is calling for a boycott of Girl Scout cookies until the Girl Scouts officially bans the inclusion of transgender members because, she says, it goes against “scout values.” The New York Daily News reports:

"Why is GSUSA willing to break its own safety rules and go against its own research findings to accomodate transgender boys?" Taylor says.

"Unfortunately, I think it is because GSUSA cares more about promoting the desires of a small handful of people than it does my safety and the safety of my friends. And they are doing it with the money we earn for them by selling Girl Scout cookies.”

The video was posted to honestgirlscouts.com, a group that encourages the Girl Scouts to eliminate sexual education and insist on a return to the traditional values listed in Girl Scouts of USA Congressional Charter that includes the words "qualities of truth ... purity."

The video, which received more than 100,000 hits as of Thursday morning, sparked response videos from people praising the Girl Scouts for allowing transgender kids into troops.

In Colorado, one mom, Amy Thieme, told 9News that she is using the video to encourage people to buy more cookies to voice their support for the trangender scout, Bobby Montoya, and the Girl Scouts.

And I've come to the conclusion that you really can't. There will always be bigots but with each generation and passing decade it seems they get crazier and crazier. Maybe it's something in the water?

The good thing though is that such bigotry seems to getting less and less acceptable with each passing generation and fewer people are supportive of such anti-GLBTQ efforts (and more people are able and willing to fight them). The truth of the matter is that bigoted people eventually get old and die.
I do wonder if people whom have devoted their lives fighting against abortion rights and equal rights for GLBTQ persons get a real sense of satisfaction and "job well done" every night? How many of them go to their graves feeling like they really accomplished something by boycotting the Girl Scouts because they choose to be an inclusive organization, helping shut down abortion clinics, endanger the lives (and livelihoods) of abortion providers/staff, and, of course, ensuring that gays and lesbians can't (in most states still) marry the persons they love?

My favorites are Tagalongs & Samoas. My wife loves the Thin Mints. My son is in the transition between liking Girl Scout Cookies to liking actual Girl Scouts. Kudos to the GSA for inclusion!

They will probably gain some. I know I'll be buying more boxes and giving them away to neighbors, or even just giving the Troop an extra $2o or so if that's allowed.

Girl Scout cookies are like crack, and everyone waits every year for them to come out. A few Evangelicals here and there won;t matter.

I am, however, afraid, some of the bigots may confront the kids when they're selling them outside stores, etc.

we did all the same fun stuff of boy scouts, without the macho and homophobic bullshit.

we never had any problems. on camping trips, they had their tent, we had ours. it was no big deal, really.

i support the Girl Scouts, and applaud them!

with her/his ambisexual name. Maybe if Taylor's parents had chosen a moniker of unambiguous sexuality, this wouldn't be a problem now.

Kids can be so empathetic and kind when they are exposed to the right kind of environment. Some though are taught to hate. What a cruel burden to saddle them with for the rest of the lives. It should be considered child abuse.

I hope the GS are overwhelmed with support for taking the stand they took.

Just why would she think that a transgendered seven-year-old is a threat to her or her friends' "safety"?

I hope this kid grows up to find her teen opinions embarrassing.
