Start writing Bills on individual proposals.
Like EV credits... write a Bill extending EV credits, resetting the "counter" on ALL automakers. An extra credit if you trade in a gas guzzler.
Then $300/child monthly tax credits...
Break the BBB into individual parts and bring them up for votes.
Get people on the record.
After the break, Congress needs to get busy.

(5,168 posts)The filibuster can prevent opening debate on anything potentially embarrassing to the MAGAt party.

(5,168 posts)I don't understand what you mean.
The Magistrate
(95,244 posts)There's no practical difference, and no need or reason to distinguish between a vote for filibuster and a vote against a bill. Particularly in campaign agitation.

(4,211 posts)correctly they don't normally "vote" for the filibuster of a piece of legislation. The ruling party doesn't bring it to the floor if there aren't 60 votes to proceed to begin with. They normally know this ahead of time.

I followed the guidelines applied against me by the powers that be here I would be reporting you for "insensitivity" since you have obviously misgendered me based on my user name which is neither feminine or masculine. But rest easy because I am not such a person who would do that. I know you mean no harm.

House of Roberts
(5,168 posts)and the Dems have to muster 60 votes to override his 'hold'. That's been true since I can remember.
There is no vote until there is 60 votes to open debate. Even then, you'd still have to have 60 to close debate and proceed to a floor vote.
The Magistrate
(95,244 posts)You call a vote for cloture. It loses, because there aren't sixty decent souls in the Senate, but votes have to be cast if this is done, and cast openly. It is true that common practice is to count and not bother if you'd not carry the matter, but that is a choice.

(6,008 posts)None of those individual bills will make it to the floor without 10 republicans signing on. They will all be filibustered.

(12,430 posts)Manchin can strong arm the GOP to go along with SOME of the BBB components.
All he has to say is... "Hmmm... filibuster"

You know if he actually did stuff like that, I'd have more respect for him, but he doesn't.

(21,945 posts)the goal is to actually get stuff passed.
I think the suggestion is that since Manchin may have now made that impossible, the alternative is to cue up a bunch of election-year show votes in order to get Republicans on the record. Break the bill up into individual chunks each of which is popular with the electorate, then hold votes on all of them and make the Republicans vote against them (or filibuster them).
If we can't get bills passed, the next best thing would be to make political hay out of them.
That strategy has strong political value
It's the only option at this point

The Magistrate
(95,244 posts)Everybody must be put on the record.
The only chance of running on a 'give me the votes and I'll finish the job' platform is to have it all down in black and white who kept popular measures from passing. And it must be shown a genuine effort was made, and balked by people actively trying to make life miserable for you, the ordinary voter.

(424 posts)Give the Repukes and Media the meme, Biden and Dems can't get stuff done.
And it will demotivate progressives.
Best to do minor pivot to Insurrection and focus on rooting out big money. Some Dems will be caught up in the net.

(15,325 posts)Its more time consuming but it can be done.
We'll see how the RW votes on these, especially considering their constituents, as they go into an election year.
Watch those Repubs from Blue States, as there's some serious pressure from back home.
Best of luck to you President Biden & our fearlessly loyal Democrats!

(15,575 posts)Breaking BBB into separate bills would make them all subject to the filibuster, and there would never be a floor vote to put people on the record.

We The People need to get busy NOW. We can't wait for 2022 and beyond.
I remember the Women's March in DC in 2017. I was there. (Not forgetting the efforts all across the country).
Methinks it is time for a similar peaceful effort. But much better attended. And focused on The Hill not the White House. But held in every city and town across the Land of The Free and The Home of The Brave.

(13,919 posts)And noone remembers hardly any of them because most never get a vote.
As none of these will get a vote.
We get one shot. Except we arent even going to take that one shot, this year.
