Boehner's So Whipped From the Last Tax Fight That He's Looking To Fold Again

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House Speaker John Boehner, hoping to spare fellow Republicans a second embarrassing defeat over payroll tax cuts, is prepared to navigate around rebellious Tea Party-aligned lawmakers to get a deal, according to congressional aides.

Republicans in the House of Representatives got a public drubbing from critics within and outside the party in December for initially refusing to approve a Senate plan to extend the tax break for 160 million Americans through February . . .

Now, with Democratic and Republican negotiators preparing for a new round of talks in the coming days to extend the payroll tax cut for the rest of the year, Republican leaders are anxious to move quickly to get a deal, aides said . . .

"I think Boehner will seek a more accommodating approach to get a good percentage of Democrats to vote for it - even if it costs him a lot of House Republican freshmen," one House Republican leadership aide told Reuters.

. . . the political fallout from the December showdown with Democrats was so unpleasant for Republicans that some congressional aides now speculate that Republicans might push to accelerate a deal by January 24, when Obama gives his annual State of the Union address to Congress.

in the legislation....just as a little payback. Not sure they could get the bill out of committee, but I think we know that Boehner is not going to let this bill get obstructed.

They may let him finish out the year, but if he folds he won't be back next year as Speaker, even if they stay in the majority.

This is how the Democrats should always be. We're on the right side for Americans, and our reps and senators should fight to keep it that way.

This article makes me smile inside and out.

They underestimate President Obama at their own peril.

Wow, what a victory for progressives that is.

What will Obama do next? Force Republicans to give in to his plan to invade Iran?
Force Republicans to give in to drilling for oil in ANWR or the Gulf?
Force Republicans to give in to approving the Keystone pipeline?

With his awesome power to get Republicans to approve conservative legislation, the possibilities are endless.
