It's Midnight in Washington. The Democrats have an opportunity to define the Republican Party as a party that committed the worst kind of dereliction of duty. They violated their oath of office.
After trumps 1st impeachment trial, Adam Schiff rose and said to the entire country, to the Republicans, Its Midnight in Washington . He told everyone, if the Republicans do not do their duty, convict a proven guilty Trump, he would commit more crimes. They would all be back here again.
Schiff was right . The Republicans committed dereliction of duty, This led to Trumps attempted overthrow our country. The democrats are a party that's upholds the law, they follow their oath, they do not commit dereliction of duty.
The Republicans are a failed party, guilty of dereliction of duty, violating their oath of office, guilty of unleashing an attempted coup by a lunatic they set free.
That's what the Democrats should run on.

(17,519 posts)They see liberals as the problem, not Putin, not Trump, not Fascism. It has been drilled into them since the days of Reagan. They shall not be moved. They are the Patriots and we are the villains and they have a solution for the problem. A final solution.

Republicans = Fascism

(30,996 posts)Then watch them stumble around and try and tell us that this is a republic not a democracy. That is one of their lame go-to non-arguments. Ask them in their state who wins the election for governor or senator- the person with the most votes. That equals democracy

(94,464 posts)The average voter IS NOT FOCUSED on Jan 6 and Trump's efforts to overturn the election. They want elected officials to focus on THEIR issues. Inflation. Job security. Medical Costs. Education.

(30,996 posts)How can the GOP win when they have no policies? Because they do win elections without caring a bit about what happens to the average American. We always try to help people and lift them up, Republicans just want to punish the people they dont like. And that is their whole campaign usually

(7,408 posts)These midterms, and their top 3 issues are inflation/rising prices, crime, and getting past COVID.
You can see the messages shifting the last couple of weeks, Pelosi saying Democrats are not the party of defund the police and many state and local Democrats ending COVID restrictions/mandates.
Inflation and rising prices are a much trickier problem as far as messaging. They cant campaign on most of the real solutions to those problems (like hiking interest rates and reducing deficit spending) and Congress isnt going to pass anything that would actually fix it regardless.

(4,913 posts)It's about how the Republicans committed dereliction of duty twice. Trump was proven guilty in both impeachments trials. The Republicans did not convict because of fear, fear of Trump. Not because he was innocent. That led directly to the mess we are in now. It was a failure of epic proportions. Not running on that would stupid in my opinion.
Of course the Democrats should also run on what they will do for the American people. That goes without saying.

(94,464 posts)If they don't care about it, don't bring it up in the election.

(4,913 posts)Has anybody asked them? Is that asked in any poll? I'm an American and I care about it a lot. Maybe if the Democrats talked about how the Republicans would let a Republican president do this again, commit crimes again at will, the American people would really care about it. They should.

(4,913 posts)It's not being talked about, it's not being asked. Make it an issue and see how people respond. Polls always show people care about the economy, jobs the most. The democrats should focus on that, but they can also drive the message of how the Republicans are unfit to lead our country, about how dangerous they have become.

(4,913 posts)In the upcoming elections the republicans will blame the Democrats for inflation. They will say the democrats inflation is destroying America, destroying your lives , they are evil. It's not true.
Why should the Democrats not run on what is true. How the republicans set free a guilty president twice which almost led to the destruction of our country.

(94,464 posts)You're argument appears to be that voters WOULD care about it if Democrats campaigned on it. 40 years of experience in politics tells me otherwise. The way the McAuliffe campaign played out confirms it.
Add to which, there's only one Republican Senator who voted to acquit Trump who's up for re-election in a State that's remotely competitive.

(4,913 posts)Yes, I do believe the voters would care about a party that almost destroyed America as we know it. Yes, the Democrats should run on what the voters care about, the economy, jobs, etc. That goes without saying it. That's why I didn't mention it in my original post.
Its Midnight in Washington. That would be a great campaign slogan. We warned you what would happen and you did not listen. If you elect the Republicans, they will do it again.

(45,016 posts)people don't believe it. The message should be Democrats care about people and want to help them with their needs and Democrats prove it by acting on those needs. Running against Republicans and their corruption is not going to work, the media is always going to give them cover Too many people don't care or are in a position that just surviving is more important.

(4,913 posts)The Republicans violated their oath of office at a level never seen before. It led directly to an attempted over throw of our country. The republicans did not do this with Nixon. They would have convicted him, instead Nixon resigned. It should be a big part of the democrats message, then they can talk about all the positive things they do for the American people.
The American people should be reminded everyday, non-stop, about how badly the Republicans failed our country at every level.
Not to do so would be sheer incompetence.
Autumn
(45,016 posts)the ones that currently exist puts out on a 24/7 basis. There are people out there everyday on the talk shows putting it out. But the idiots covering for the attempted overthrow are given the last word and that's what sticks.
As for what the Republicans did to Nixon? That will never fucking happen again. Trump could shoot someone, Mitch and others could shoot someone, unarmed and in the back and not a thing would be done. The media would convince America it was self defense.

But agree with Autumn, better to have an aspiratational message for all to rally around.
Or use both.

(25,442 posts)in 2016 and 2020, as if Democrats stand for nothing and have no message, have been in power for two years and have done nothing and are making excuses.
Democratic Party stands for equality, health care as a human right, progress. This is always the message.
